I have been in a flare for the past few weeks I went to er 5 days ago and was admitted for two days. I've been out for three days now but I'm not having any relief I'm on 20mg of prednisone and getting ready to start apriso.the cramping and bleeding just won't stop and this prednisone is harsh making my bp go up and I stay hot and feel nauseas.anyone have good results with apriso I'm alittle scared to start it as I couldn't tolerate asacol many years ago.i told the drs this but they said these were more well tolerated then the old class mesalamine drugs.as I understand my inflammation is in the transverse colon haven't had it there before it's always been down low left side. Also would like to has anyone else had side effects like this from prednisone thanks in advance

5 years is a long remission, sorry to hear that you're now flaring again. What was your maintenance treatment during that time of remission?

Yes, prednisone is quite annoying with its side effects. I'm on a low dose at the moment, myself. There's no real way to avoid the nuisance side effects from pred. You can try limiting your salt intake to reduce bloating. It's always good to keep up light exercise, increase your calcium intake, and increase your potassium intake. I'll make sure to have milk and a banana each day while on it.

20 mgs of prednisone isn't much. It's more common to start at 40mgs. You might need a higher dose to get your symptoms under control. 5 days isn't that long, there's still a chance that the pred will kick in within a few days.

What exactly happened back when you couldn't tolerate Asacol in the past?

20mg isn't much of a starting dose, especially if your symptoms are moderate+. I think you should go to a GI and see whether you can come up with a plan. Maybe you will have great success with the Apriso and the lower dose will work, but you will have to wait and see, and if the symptoms are making life difficult, you may want to see about a higher dose of pred. You will have side effects. Some can be easily overcome with sleep aids, exercise... others, you're stuck with until you're off the drug completely. My body seriously changed while on steroids and it was really difficult to get my regular body back. Eventually I did, but I carried weight in weird places for years.

Pred has nasty side effects BUT sometimes i and my Dr know its only instant stop the bleeding cure.Now Cortenema works magic for me keeping flares to a minimum.

As already stated, 20 mg prednisone is quite low for a patient such as yourself that required a hospital admission. In my experience, I've been discharged on 40-50 mg prednisone with instructions to taper after 4 weeks. For me it takes around 3 weeks to see and feel a difference. Unfortunately, the side effects are the cause for my "hate" in this love/hate rship I have with prednisone. When I was younger, I rarely suffered from the side effects but now I experience the insomnia, weight gain, hypertension, elevated heart rate, night sweats and cra-cra emotions. One oddity it that my skin looks great, haha. Were you on IV prednisone while in the hospital?

Thanks for replying it's just not kickin in I been waiting all day for the gi office to call me back no luck yet. My remission therapy was smoking I smoked and had none of this whole time i smoked.im going less trips to bathroom but I still have blood and cramping that's really getting to be to much. This is really inhuman to have to live like this I want my colon out I don't want it no more. If smoking hadn't started making my heart race everytime i smoked I wouldn't have stopped. My inflammation is up high this time instead of down low it's in the transverse colon which it's never been there on the other three flares I've had since diagnosis.i was also low on potassium when I went to er that night I took a total of 12 potassium pills in hospital. I don't know why they release me if it wasn't under control they said I was getting better i guess by my labs but I'm not feeling better I mean I feel better then when I went in but I'm no where near there yet.
