Mesalamine enemas leaking out?

I am having a problem using Perrigo mesalamine enemas because I'm not retaining them, but not in the typical way. I don't feel the urgency to use the bathroom after I start using the enema, but instead the fluid leaks out of my anus so I have to stop. On average I can only get about a 1/4 to a 1/3 of a bottle in before it starts leaking out. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong? I have been laying on my left side with my left leg extended and my right leg bent forward. Maybe I should be holding the bottle at a different angle? I insert it with the tip pointed towards the navel and then face it towards my back as best as I can while squeezing a little at a time.

I've read many posts from other users with UC and have taken pieces of advice into account but I can't find any post where other enema users had the liquid leak out. I do find it helpful to squeeze excess air out before using the enemas but I don't warm up the bottle beforehand because I prefer it to be slightly cool (aka room temperature) so that I can feel the liquid coming out of the bottle. Otherwise I have no idea if anything is coming out. Should I try something differently in order to retain more of the bottle? It really bothers me that Perrigo doesn't put a 800 number anywhere on the box or on their somewhat-lacking instructions so that I can call with questions about how to use their product.

I insert it as far in as I can and I do my best to relax. I'm certainly not clenching. How do I know if I'm squeezing too fast? It doesn't feel like too much liquid is coming out because I don't apply a lot of pressure to the bottle but it's hard to compare notes on this type of thing.

I'll try to vary how far in I put it and see if it affects the leakage. Thanks for the tip (no pun intended!)

Are you fairly empty when you use the Perrigo?

i would think a lot would depend on the length of your arms and the size of your butt cheeks

honestly, i don't recall - pretty much whatever works is the way i would do it -

Soy, you made me laugh out loud!! I've been putting my right hand between the legs and when I recently tried to do it the other way around (behind the butt), I found it to be kind of painful and harder to maneuver.

Last night, I took the advice of a APRN at my GI office and inserted a Canasa suppository, waited an hour, and then did the enema, which did seem to help retain more of the liquid. I think I will keep trying that even though it's quite a hassle but at this point, it's one of my only options to battle the nausea and frequent bloody diarrhea.
