Mesalamine Intolerant?

Hello all. First time poster. Just a little background. I was diagnosed with UC in May of 2009 and immediately started on Lialda. It was not until 2011, I was put on my first round of prednisone which pulled me out of my first real flare. Between late 2011 and September 2015 I was symptom free; which I attribute to two wonderful pregnancies and breastfeeding. Shortly after stopping breastfeeding with my youngest, I began flaring, fast and hard. At that point I decided to switch GIs, was scoped and put on a high dose of prednisone. I felt great until I started to taper past 15mg when I would start to flare again. I was put on Imuran by a different doctor in the practice (my doctor had transitioned to a new practice). The Imuran was short lived when I developed pancreatits.

When I met with my doctor at his new practice, we discussed and decided to start on Humira and stay at the lowest dose of pred I could handle until the Humira kicked in. I had a great success with Humira almost immediately which was likely do to the pred. Once I came off the pred completely a few months later, I was still feeling good but starting dealing with some blood and diarrhea. I personally felt that those issues were related to the Lialda and not the disease so I stopped taking the Lialda and have only been taking the Humira (this decision was not discussed with my doctor). Since stopping the Lialda, I feel good, my bathroom trips have lessened, no blood and mostly solid.

My doctor explained to me that with UC, he likes to keep his patients on a maintenance medication that targets the intestines while on Humira. While I can get behind that, and understand why he would want to do that, I do not think that the mesalamine is working for me. I plan to discuss this with him an appointment next week. Can anyone explain to me how a doctor would classify one as mesalamine intolerant and what maintenance medication they may prescribe?

A mesalamine intolerance is a dramatic worsening of symptoms. Like going from 2 solid non urgent bms a day to a total of 8 loose and urgent bms; very dramatic.
