The ER is trained to treat life threatening conditions, and with UC that can be things like dehydration (will hydrate you with an IV) and pain (will administer IV Steroids or other oral meds), and anemia (administer iron infusions if very low) from our flares. However, they are not trained in the ER with a lot of knowledge about UC, and will refer you to your gasteroenteroligist for most of your bowel-specific complaints when they aren't life-threatening. The ER is there to stabilize you and get you home or admitted based on what they assess. The ER can get you admitted to the hospital if you're in real bad shape.
You know your symptoms best, and are the best person to judge whether an ER visit is necessary. If you're in real bad shape then go. Just know that they aren't the cure-all for IBD troubles, that's what your gasteroenteroligist is for. Be persistent and contact your doctor, and find a new one if they refuse to be responsive and help you with your concerns.
