The side effects and safety profile of Immunomodulators and biologics are actually quiet similar.
Immunomodulators work by intentionally lowering your body's white blood cellcount. WBCs are your immune system's attack dog directly causing inflammation within our large intestine. The less WBC you have the better your UC symptoms are. Your WBC cannot get to unsafe levels though, so routibe blood monitoring is required first weekly then biweekly, and then trimonthly for the duration that you're on that med. Very, very slow acting meds taking 2-3 months to work. They are affordable generic pills you take.
The most common type of biologics are tnf-alpha blocking (remicade, humira, and simponi). They interfere with your immune systems ability to signal an inflammatory attack. Your immune system says "send inflammation here" with a protein called tnf-alpha. These biologics are bio-engineered proteins meant to dock with tnf-alpha and block that signal. Once you're immune attack is mute or at least quieted then your UC symptoms improve. These are expensive brandnamed meds. They are given either by IV injection at a hospital or at home via self injection.
