Cramps proctitis flare up and meds or tips?

Hi all hope everyone is ok?

Just in the middle of my first ever flare up in 4 years I'm awaiting the consultant to check bloods and more than likely another scope but in the meantime I'm just starting to get the amount of blood to reduce but the cramps I'm getting right at the bottom of my abdomen are very painful so was wondering if any of you wonderful people can advise some otc help for this bearing in mind that I suffer from gerd and I'm on lansoprazole?

Hi. I'm also currently in a UP flare. Had colonoscopy this past week and confirmed flare but at least it hasn't progressed in length. I have been on Nortriptylin 25mg each night and it has really helped with the stomach pain for me but it doesn't do anything about the stool associated issues. Upped Canasa to 2 x's a day 6 weeks ago and it didn't help with this flare. Just filled and started Uceris Foam to see how it works for me. I've put myself on a low residue diet for a week to see how that may help. Have to be firm in staying away from caffeine, greasy high fat foods, dairy, chocolate and fiber rich foods/raw foods which are all known triggers for me. I would say if you're seeing less blood that it sounds like the med is starting to work. I haven't seen formed anything for 2 months now. This flare has really scared me, the amount of blood is nothing like ever before and the urgency is so confusing, for instance one day I can be fine in the am but awful in the pm or vice versa or one day the urgency goes on all day long. So baffling. Woooo, bought my first Depend's, not happy about that, but I also will not miss Spring Sports for my kids. My Doc has okayed me to take as much Imodium as needed if I need to be in public for any length of time. Anyway, best of luck to you and I sincerely hope each day is better for you.

Oh my fellow sufferer, I understand the anxiety/depression. You aren't alone although this disease does make us feel like it. I am also currently experiencing the same feelings but today I chose to get into defense mode. I was all teary and frightened yesterday as realization was hitting hard but I don't want to be stuck there. Yes, Depends are what you think they are. I read on here some people wear double underwear and I will try that first. Your question about Imodium, yes My Doc said it's fine for me. I have a little past history/minor familiarity from my Mother's ibd issues so I knew it was ok to take double the amount if needed and I have done that on occasion in the past few months when I had to be in public for 6 plus hours but for me, although it works (yah!) it seems to do a little backfire the following day....um like the plug is now unplugged type of backfire so there's a small price to pay, for me.

I also use VSL 3 and have off/on since onset of this disease, unfortunately I haven't learned I need to continue this doing good AND bad. It's not a cure but it does help the good bacteria get to where you need it most.

I've really wanted to try LDN but have struck out with 4 Doc's which is quite discouraging. I live in a fairly rural area so Dr choices are somewhat limited unless I travel a minimum of 70 plus miles and also deal with lots of traffic.

The accidents are scary and embarrassing but not uncommon. Hopefully you've been reading a lot on here at old posts to see what kind of plan will help you be more at ease. I knew last summer I needed to have an extra pair of clothes/emergency type of things that will help if I have an accident while out and about but I didn't do it....today I am doing it. Kinda like now it's my time to face this disease head on.

I suffer from impatience too....but I know that finding what will help with this flare will take time. I have to give this Uceris a little time to see if it works, if not then we will have to get more aggressive.

Biggest advice, if you have noticed a pattern with certain foods, stay away from them right now at all costs. I'm stubborn and have refused to give up coffee but when flaring I put it down to 1 cup per day instead of two and absolutely no other caffeine. Lots of water. No greasy foods. Limit sweets. Again, this is what I have to do for me. Vit D and B supplements which I am low on from my recent bloodwork. Sunshine is a great moodlifter!


My Doc had told me last summer that I shouldn't be getting the higher up stomach pain and cramps from Proctitis but every time I have any kind of issues no matter how minor, I hurt up high, so I'm listening to my body on this, not his words. Last summer my PA started me on the Nortriptylin which has been amazing for the pain.....and even now in my worst flare ever I don't have as much pain as before. It only took a week for me to notice the difference! That first week I almost quit the med but forged ahead and am so glad I did,

Oh and 2 days ago I decided when someone close to me asks how I'm feeling I will not lie. I'm going to be honest. I'm scared, anxious and passing a lot of blood. It is what it is. For me, downplaying my issues don't do me any good. Comparing my issues to someone with cancer, for instance, doesn't acknowledge my pain so why would I do that to myself.

Anyway, rambling but had a lot to cover, lol. Let's both have a good day no matter what that means....resting, getting fresh air, making a plan.....we will get through today.

I suggest rectal meds....mesalamine retention enemas in addition to the oral.
Hampy...you are on 2 Lialda daily or has it been increased to twice daily?

If you are having 10-11 BM's per day with some bleeding you are likely not having mild inflammation. 1g suppositories are not going to be enough. Try to see your GI urgently or some can prescribe via phone in the meantime. You should try combination therapy with oral+ rectal and possibly add probiotics. There isn't really a great reason to wait and suffer.
