From a long term sufferer who fortunately has good periods of remission I just wanted to pass on my past months experience hoping it may help others.
I live in Australia and am lucky to have access to the best care available. But sometimes I think that with the help and advice of forums, Dr Google and my own knowledge that I can diagnose and get myself - with the help of ongoing Imuran and prednisone when required during flares to keep on top of this crappy disease
Had a flare up last November and it never really stopped properly. Tried ignoring it and hoping I'd get better but of course no.
After a hellish two weeks finally went to the Emergency and have been in hospital for ten days.
Along with my extremely swollen, pus , bloody colon - I had developed a bowel obstruction and was in a pretty bad way. Now I would never had picked that up and hate to think what may have happened.
Now after ten days of iv and everything they can throw at me I'm improving and pain free. Have started on Remicade and am very hopeful - which is all I can be.
So what my adviceis - for what it's worth - sometimes we need help. Not just the normal routine that you and your specialist has previously come up with. I think we need to not be blasé.
I actually looked up on these forums - should I go to Emergency ?- and still ummed and ahhed. So glad I did.
So - if you are reading this post because you have doubts - go to Emergency now!!! Best case scenario is that it's a waste of time. Worst case is what may have happened to me if I had waited a day or two. I have worked hard for twenty years to save this colon and I nearly lost it!!! I hate my colon at times - but like that unwanted member of my family - we all have one 😜 I still want my colon with me for sometime yet!!!!
Stay strong everyone and wishing you all long remission and hey why not - a cure!!!!
