It's more like 20-25%. Studies vary wildly in their estimates of the lifelong chances of UC patients needing colectomy surgery. They range from anything from 10-40%. Many of the studies are also quite old, so it's possible that the surgery rates are even lower now - although if they are, I wouldn't expect it to be miles lower, given that there's still a subset of UC folks who don't respond to meds.
