UC for life

I'm 57 and been struggling with UC since my early 20's. Had many flares and bouts of prednisolone along with Asacol. This was in the early eighties so you can imagine what little medication was available. Continual bleeding but no diarrhea at this stage. Prednisolone was my drug of choice. Finally I grew tired of medicating myself and went without for at least ten years, and no, I was not in remission. I dealt with my disease the best I could. Then in 2009 I had a horrible flare, along with severe diarrhea, and began seeing a new GI. Colonoscopy showed the disease had progressed higher into my large intestines. Back on prednisolone, Uceris, and 75mg of Azothioprine, and this worked great. For the next 16 years I was in remission. Actually thought I had beat the disease completely, was I ever wrong. In the summer of 2016 not only did the bleeding and diarrhea resume, but the pain was unbearable. I went to my GI, colonoscopy showed my UC was extremely active, No kidding. Back to my go to drugs and increased my Azo to 100mg. Nothing was working, not even the prednisolone. I'm now on Entyvio infusions. I'm going back for my fifth infusion May 15th and although the bleeding has stopped my diarrhea has not. Any suggestions would be helpful. I can't go anywhere, I'm a prisoner in my own home.

I agree with adding rectal meds. Healing takes a long time from a bad flare--way longer than any of us want.

I would also add probiotics (I take VSL 3 and S boulardi) and diet to the mix if you haven't do so already and start slowly. At minimum eliminate gluten, dairy, and processed foods for about a month and track your symptoms. If you want to go all out, also eliminate grains. Many of us only got results once going grain free and trying diets like SCD etc. I have had huge success with SCD and have never had to go on strong meds. After many years of remission, I had a flare in Jan 2017 and was able to get back to symptom remission with SCD, supplements and a very low dose of 5-ASA because I could not tolerate more.

My favorite food for pain and flares is chicken soup with well cooked carrots. I can also usually tolerate SCD yogurt, well cooked green beans and plain chicken, fish and eggs.

It is hopeful that you can have long periods of remission! 16 years is pretty amazing even though you feel awful right now. Hoping you will have another very long stretch after this one.

I third the enema suggestion.
Have you tried adding psyllium to add some bulk to your stool? Potato starch can also help with that, it really slows things down for me.
