Newly diagnosed

Hi, my name is Kim and my 16 yr old was recently diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis. He was just released from the hospital after 6 days. The doctors tried the steroids via IV which did not work and was put on Remicade which seemed to make him better almost immediately. Now that he is home he seems to be going back a step. He is in moderate pain and is bowel movements have increased again. This is all very new to our family. From what I've read this is going to be a long process. Just wanted to hear from y'all to see if this is normal the two steps forward two steps back?

Thanks for the quick response. He does have a GI, his next scheduled appt is in 2 weeks when he gets is second infusion of the Remicade. Foolishly I'm afraid that we thought he would only get better after his hospital stay and the start of Remicade. From what I read everybody's journey is different. I just would like to know what to expect atleast in the near future. Is it normal that he isn't feeling better??? When do I call the doctor???

He's had several stool test, last stool test was in the hospital (5 days ago) which confirmed that he had C-diff as well. He had a colonoscopy and endoscopy plus Mri. As of right now the doctors are going with Ulcerative colitis but had warned that it could possibly change to Crohn's. This is so overwhelming, he went from a healthy athletic teenager to a bedridden teenager with 0 energy and 0 appetite. Per doctors orders, being that he cannot handle solid food right now he is to be drinking eight Ensures plus and three full bottles of water. He can barely get down half of that. Please tell me this will get better!

He was in the hospital for 6 days he is still on antibiotics for the c-diff😞

Sorry to hear about your son.

I'd suggest cleaning your bathroom(s) with bleach to help prevent the c diff from coming back. C. diff can be tough to treat and bleach (with chlorine) is the only proven cleaner to be effective at killing C. diff spores.

Also, I believe Ensure contains lactose and/or milk protein. Not saying these would definitely present problems for your son, but they do for me and it seems like they do for a lot of folks. I've found meat and bone broth to be among the easiest foods to digest for me. If he's having lots of trouble with solid foods, then maybe try supplementing with some bone broth (homemade kind is the best).

One can get oral thrush from steroids.
