Can Caramel corn/popcorn bring on a flare or infection on?

I notice when I really start to flare, I wake up in the middle of night a few times with gas and pus/mucus, then in morning seems like I'm running a fever, even though thermometer says no, I have a bloody/pus accident while driving and feel like I will "go" at anytime , anywhere.
I'm on Stelara, ate some popcorn now pus and blood.
On cipro for a few weeks to calm down the colon.
My doc said he wants to refer me to U of Michigan or Henry Ford, I have an appointment at U of M in December, earliest I can get in with Dr. Higgins, top dog I guess. Im hoping too. I'm just praying I'm healing some in my colon.
Before this all started a week ago, energy was great! No remission on Stelara. My bleeeding less, urgency less (prior to this infection) feeling better.
Poops still mushy, skinny. Less diarrhea.
Dang disease!!!!!
Shame on me for trying to eat something I like. Lol

I doubt it was just the carmel corn, but it doesn't sound like the best thing for a person with UC to eat. When I was in stable remission with 5ASAs or 6mp, I was able to eat everything without symptoms presenting. The only time I had symptoms was when I was starting to flare, which I always tried to relate to something I had eaten, but in reality, I think it was just that the medication was no longer effective and I needed to add something or adjust the dose. I am happy you're going to see a new specialist. I hope you receive some options to get you to 100%. I know you've really had a rough road.

Do you have diverticulitis?
Since you have Crohns Colitis, do you have any inflammation in small intestine...is it possible you could have a stricture or blockage?

I have no problem with popcorn, but I never eat the microwave kind....just stinks and tastes yuck.

TAM, not in my wildest moment would I ever eat what you did, lol. My husband eats popcorn & I go outside when he makes a bag. Whenever I think of trying to eat a tiny amount I think about what may happen when it passes through. I think about how the hulls will irritate things & set bad things in motion. I am not a diet fanatic by any means. I stick with foods that cannot cause me issues is the bottom line. Its tough not to give in to temptation but its better than putting up with problems as a result of me making a bad decision too.

my last scope two years ago at mayo , doctor said my large bowel at top leading to small bowel was great . How do they do small bowel check? I'm going for scope and endoscope at same time hopefully sometime in dec or January.

There was twice I had this happen to be....a month or two apart, where I was backed up with gas and couldn't pass it until I laid down, right after eating, like I couldn't put anything in my body UNTIL my gas came out and I burped a ton, but it felt like I was going to pass out, tunnel vision feeling. Racing heart cuz of anxiety/panic feeling, going what's wrong with me and freaking out.

Omg how do they look for a blockage?

Popcorn kills my gut along with most other insoluble fiber.
Poor old gut just cannot handle it.
Listen to your gut when it tells you stuff.

We're both on the same schedule for Stelara, so you probably had your shot 2 weeks ago. So you're probably at a good dose in your body.

Usually they check for blockages with an x-ray.

There are multiple ways to check your small intestine, one of the best ways is an MRE, if that's not available then an MRI. There are also poll cams but those aren't good if they are worried about blockages.

I've had plenty of partial blockages. I'll feel nauseous, sometimes a temp, noisy stomach/gut, nothing passes, bloating and lots of gas. And pain. Usually they clear by themselves. Otherwise coffee, wine or grape juice work pretty well. Also a hot compress and a very hot shower/bath. Plus walking.

Only enough I can eat tons of popcorn now and it seems to really firm things up for me. In fact I swear my gut's love it. Yet to this day, a teeny tiny bit of carrots can take me out. These diseases are messed up.

That said I don't think I would try popcorn (and don't ever recall trying) while I was flaring. I was to scared to.

My u of m appt is moved up to September and so that means my scope will be soon after smile I'm excited to get this done -9th scope in 12 years . Fun

Don't you think that you should also get your small intestines checked too? The scope can only go a little ways into your small intestine.

When was your last dose of Prednisone? Maybe you should go back on a steroid for a little bit, especially if you are getting a blockage.

Hi Keith, How are you doing on Stelara? Yes I want my small intestine check for sure!! I want to see how I do on cipro for a few days before I add pred, I was on it for 6 months, ended in June. That's stuff helps but the side effects are terrible!!

I'm doing pretty well on Stelara. Towards the end of the 8 weeks I need to throw some Augmentin or Cipro at it for the last 3-5 days.

Each dose I seem to be doing better on.

Maybe there is a correlation to you stopping Pred and you getting blockages/flares 30 days later? You might need something to get you through for a while like Cipro or Entocort. Watch out for Thrush & SIBO

24 hours on cipro 500 mg twice a day (morning then night )and wow I feel a ton better already! Not shot is 9/4 and that will be 6 months on Stelara, started 3/14/17.

Glad you're feeling better! We've had other users post that popcorn helps them. Typical UC thingn helps somes and bothers others...

I usually feel better in 24-48 hours on a antibiotic.

But if this happens again you should probably consider a steroid or another medication for longer term treatment. if it was a blockage then they are not fun, you should treat it to try to prevent future blockages.

550 twice a day.

Do you take any Pepto Bismol? It really helps me. Sometimes I'll take Cipro 550 once a day and add Pepto.

Yes I like Pepto, but I don't need anything for diarrhea or stop me from going. Any liquid I have is pus/mucus/blood sometimes and pepto /Imodium doesn't hold it back sad Pepto is good for settling my tummy down, like gas smile i take omeprezole for acid reflux and it helps a ton!!

Caramel is a type of candy and/or popcorn.

Carmel is a town in California.

Corn grown in or near Carmel would likely be similar both nutritionally and in flavour to the same variety of corn grown elsewhere. Of course such a determination would require controlled testing.

Regardless, neither caramel nor Carmel would be a likely cause of an infection. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, prions, and parasites cause infections.

Miracles,

Pepto acts as a mild antibiotic. Helps with gas and bacteria issues. Don't confuse it with Imodium which slows the bowels.

I take Pepto TABLETS almost daily. The others can turn your mouth/tongue black.
