Hi everyone, this is my first post here so forgive me if this is talked about a lot. I'm currently in the middle of my second bad flareup ever and they have prescribed me Prednisone to go along with the lialda i take everyday already.

At first they gave me uceris but that didn't do a thing. While the prednisone seems to be working somewhat I hear it comes at a cost. I see my face fatter and my energy is pretty low. I dont know if this is a common thing. Has anyone else experienced some side effects?

Oh yes, prednisone side effects are literally the worst. I had a fat hairy face, gained so much weight, I was irritable, unable to tolerate people, didn't sleep, heart racing, arthritic, covered in pimples, hair on head falling out, gums receding, appetite insatiable. No one could bear to be around me and I couldn't stand other people. I felt like I was the most difficult person on the planet & to top it off i hated the way I looked. I am sure a lot of it was in my head but it was awful. Thankfully it goes away when you're off the drug.

Prednisone alone helped my flares. Side effects which I'm still having are no sleep!!! Maybe get 3-4 hours a night. But lots of energy otherwise and focus. Fatigue easy but able to complete my day. Eat whatever I want also!!! Finally. Still going 5-8!times a day but manageable. Starting Remicade tomorrow. Currently on 35mg

Nssg has summed it up nicely! but you might not get all of those side effects if you are not on it too long. I think about food a lot and want to
Strangle people some days..
Best tip i can give you is to exercise regularly to keep your weight stable.

Prednisone is an effective emergency rescue medication that saves us from the worst of our UC symptoms while our other medications are given time to work. We have a love-hate relationship with pred as it does come with nuisance, temporary side effects for many of us. Nobody gets all of the side effects but we get a few random ones. Stuff like insomnia, being very emotional, and water retention/bloating are common. Use pred strategically when it's needed most for as short of a time as it is needed.

To reduce the odds of bloating make sure to reduce your sodium intake, that retention goes away a few weeks after stoping pred. It's a good idea to increase your potasium and calcium intake, and add in some light weight-bearing excercise if you can do it.

The restlessness and insomnia is the worst. I also felt like my face became rounder and just very sluggish
