Anyone ever have increased heart rate after colonoscopy??

Hi everyone,

I have my colonoscopy scheduled for tomorrow and am a bit worried about being being knocked out. After my last scope a year ago, I woke up to a bunch of concerned nurses looking down at me telling me my heart rate was elevated and we had to wait for it to come down. That darn machine kept beeping and beeping while I tried to relax (I was already relaxed from the drugs though). I was laying there waiting for at least an hour if not more, and then it finally came down.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?? I'm not sure what drugs they gave me but for both of my other scopes the drugs seems to affect me more than most. According to family, I was still pretty loopy hours after getting home.

I mentioned this to my doc (she's my new doc at the same practice) and she told me they would monitor me closely, but she also said there was no mention of this in my records which is very troubling to me.

Anyone have any wisdom or insight to share??

No I've never had heart rate issues or any other from anesthesia. Unless you are flaring you could cancel this scope and research this with your primary doc. Your GI should be able to provide you and your primary with records of what anesthesia was used in what amount.

I am not surprised there was no notation in your records about this, anesthesia is the greatest danger in almost all medical procedures. That's the reason those docs pay the highest insurance rates. I have one doctor (derma) that refuses to have general anesthesia because of the dangers but he's too young to ever have had a c-scope, may change his mind...or not.

Really worth doing the homework so you can get less problematic recovery for your next scope. This disease is lifelong and you'll have many scopes to come.

(PS Once you can find out what anes. was used you can look up incidences of increased heart rate and other symptoms).

The doc just got back to me and said the most likely cause was probably dehydration from the prep. I'm flaring and have been waiting for this appointment so I don't think I'll reschedule.

Dehydration can cause increased heart rate (Tachycardia). Make sure you're staying well hydrated as that prep does make you go an awful lot, usually straight liquid. I'd try to keep drinking water through the prep's purge process for sure!

They will be monitoring you closely during the anesthesia. An anesthesiologist will be monitoring your vitals the whole time and is there just to make sure everything is safe!

I'd certainly mention your past experience to the anesthesiologist just as an FYI.

I have real problems with the prep and anesthesia both. I'm always the last one to be discharged from the procedure, no matter how early I go in. I've never had increased heart rate though. It takes me a long time to wake up and then I always end up nauseous. They give me fentanyl to help with that, but I still get nauseated.

I often end up going to the procedure with a migraine and associated nausea--I suppose it's from dehydration. I tried really hard to drink a lot of liquids during the prep, but it just doesn't help much for some reason. I mean, there's only so much liquid I can put into my stomach at one time.
