Hi All,

Looking for your advice and experience. I am currently flaring again and have been on and off since January, everytime I try and taper off the pred enemas the flare comes back. I am completely intolerant to mesalazine and I am currently taking prednisolone enemas twice a day but they don't seem to be working as effectively as they used to. Thankfully I am meeting with my new Gastroenterologist today and trying to think of questions to ask him, such as alternative medications to try. I am really reluctant to go on oral prednisolone but know I need something to get this flare under control and I was thinking of asking about a different type of steroid called beclomethasone dipropionate, it's called Clipper in the UK but believe it's called Uceris in the US. Just wondering if anyone has experience in using it and if it has less side effects than pred?

I haven't used it myself. Are you from the UK?

Is the flare serious enough to consider biologics or 6MP?

The flare is pretty bad, I can't tolerate any solid food at the moment. There's not a lot of blood but just some blood clots with each bowel movement but the pain is bad. It's not quite as bad as ny first flare but then I think that is because I a taking the enemas twice a day. Thinking on it I might be worse because I didn't even need to use the enemas twice a day to nip my first flare in the bud.....

Clipper is Beclometasone dipropionate. Uceris is budesonide.

Ask for stool sample testing.

Maybe he will take a look-see in office and assess (i can make lots of puns here) the severity.

I used Uceris. I had no side effects and it worked great.

TroubledTurds - As in any solid food makes the pain and diarrhea worse so sticking to fluids for a few days to help slow it down if possible. about 6 or 7 bms a day and the urgency is immediate or else sad

Quincy, he said he wants to give it two more weeks on the enemas then he wants to try me on sulfalazine which I'm a bit reluctant to do because I'm completely intolerant to mesalazine but it's worth a shot. He also said he would try me on clipper. I showed him photos of my stools on my phone (yep in the middle of family photos I have some lovely poop selfies as I like to call them :turnsmile so that he could take a look se!

Garthy they are reluctant to use the more advanced meds at the moment because I am still indeterminate colitis and yes I'm in the UK.

Fyi Prednisone never helped me but hydrocortisone enemas helped a lot. Maybe worth trying.

Your intolerance to rectal mesalamine could be something in the mixture.....or the fact that you've not been on oral 5ASA and had continual symptoms.

I find it interesting that he would try you on sulfasalazine initially, for if you do have a reaction, it could be from sulpha.

Regardless, worth a try, and if you have joint pain or arthritis, it can be of help.
He should put you on the oral now since you are using the predsol enemas.
If you do improve, that would be good.
