Remicade & Fevers/Coping with Extended period between infusions

Hi, all

I was supposed to get Remicade today but came down w a fever right before I was supposed to leave for the hospital so I called and was told not to come in.

Obviously, I'm not getting my infusion now and never would with a fever, but it made me curious - what would happen if you did get remicade with a fever? I read somewhere that it could kill you but I'm just wondering scientifically why that is.

The other thing - I now have to wait an additional week (I'm normally at every six weeks - this puts me at 7) and I'm really nervous this will upset my colon. I'm already having my telltale signs that it's time to get another infusion (lower left abdominal cramping, more gas) and now I have to wait another week. Does anyone have any tips for holding off a flare in the time being?

No, you wouldn't die if you got your remicade infusion with an active fever.

If you have an active infection that requires antibiotics (a UTI, bronchitis, sinus infection,etc.) then you should delay your remicade infusion until your course of antibiotics is over. Why? Your body can fight off an infection easier and quicker with antibiotics and without remicade. Your body responds to an infection by causing inflammation, remicade weakens the body's ability to cause inflammation. So, while on remicade the infection symptoms you experience would be worse, more severe, and last longer than if you were not on remicade.

If you were already taking remicade and got an infection while on it, then the infection might take a few extra days to treat total , one of which is an extra day of bad symptoms.
