Currently was having diarrhea and blood start around July this year. Paid no mind until it got worse. Went to the GI Sept 28 discovered I have colitis about 8 inch. Taking steroids enema before bed and 2 tabs twice a day of mesalimine. Still having the symptoms as of today. However morning bm is always soft stool with no blood. Toward the afternoon and night Diarrhea and blood start to come. Some days just plain blood. I called the GI and tell me to wait a few weeks. I feel pain sometimes during the week. Should I see another GI or wait? Thanks guys.

Hello & welcome! Did you get a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy with biopsies to confirm the diagnosis? The reason I ask is because there are some pathogens that mimic symptoms similar to UC. You should get stool tests.

How were you diagnosed?

I think the steroid enemas + the oral med is a good plan, but 8 inches isn't the smallest amount of inflammation, are you taking the max dose? 4800mg? I notice some people do better on the mesalamine enemas vs. the steroid enemas, but some people are intolerant of mesalamine and it causes them increased symptoms.

Your doctor may be a bit passive if you've been nearly a month on this treatment and you don't feel like you've seen much improvement. How would you gauge your improvement? Are you a little better? 50%? not at all? Worse? If you you've seen steady improvement, maybe giving it a little time is a good idea. If you're not having improvement, and the doctor isn't helpful or responsive to your concerns, I would definitely see someone else. There are doctors who specialize in IBD treatment at IBD centers. Those doctors are usually the most aggressive and knowledgeable about IBD treatments and options.

I feel the same. A little worse having to go the bathroom more often. I did 8 vials of stool and all came back negative. Did a stool culture and parasite and something else. Then did the colonoscopy. Doc did sent the tissue out and confirm I had colitis. The pills says 1.2 GM so total 4.8 in a day. Been taken pills and enema for 3 weeks now. Thanks.

I wouldn't see a new GI yet but if you are not getting better next week, I would call again and request stronger medication. Your GI is probably hoping to avoid Prednisone, if possible.

Ok. Is it normal to have normal bm in the morning. A few hours Afterward im having mild cramps than have to use the bathroom many times with blood and diarrhea.

It happens with UC and means you're flaring. Mornings are always awful for us.

Doc says inflammation was found secondary to proctosigmoid colitis. Doc never says uc. Is it different? Picture show red streak with some white stuff patches over it. I'm looking at the paperwork.

Yes, colitis is a generic term for colon inflammation. Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic illness.

Colitis can generally be cured. It has a cause. It is not caused by a faulty immune system - as is believed to be the cause of UC but people argue that issue.

You can have colitis from a pathogen, and cure it with an antibiotic. If you have Ulcerative Colitis, and you get a bug, and you take the same antibiotic, you will only rid yourself of the bug. You may still have active inflammation, and you are aware that even if you get a break from symptoms, they are likely to pop up again repeatedly throughout your life.

You should request a copy of the report & put a call in to ask these questions smilewinkgrin

Doc says the biopsy came back and confirm i have colitis. That what he said. I didnt ask what kind. On the patient portal i got this. Noninfective gastroenteritis and colitis, unspecified, Benign neoplasm of colon, unspecified, Hemorrhage of anus and rectum. Going to call this week and ask.

Doc office was close today. I'm actually having worse symptoms after start taking mesalamine. Abdominal pain and more bleeding. More urge to go bathroom. Can't even going out. Afraid of bm. Any suggestions? Thank you.

about 5 percent of UC pateints who take mesalamine-based medications have to discontinue them due to what's known as a mesalamine-intolerance/allergy. That's described as a dramatic worsening of your symptoms, like going from 2 bms a day that are formed and free of urgency, to suddenly having very loose bms 8 times a day with great urgency (it has to be dramatic). If that is you, then talk to your gasteroenteroligist and tell him/her that you suspect you have a mesalamine-intolerance, and your symptoms and your doctor will advise further. Different forms of the medication might be tried, or they might put you on an entirely different class of UC medications altogether (like immunomodulators 6mp/imuran).

GI says take 2400 instead of 4800 of mesalamine and twice enema.
Told me to call him in a week. I stop mesalamine myself today and bleeding was minimal. But still have lot of urgency. I don’t know whats wrong with me. I think i might see another doctor. How do i search for doctor or clinic that are good at this type of problem? Thanks again.
