Odd thing.
I've had a skin rash for years now. It's a bumpy rash on my chest, it would flair up from time to time but ever-present. I can now associate it with being worse during what were respectively obvious UC flair ups (was only diagnosed this week). I had been to a dermatologist before, but nothing really helped.
Since I got out of the hospital, the steroids have
eliminated
that chronic rash (I'm on pred right now, too)... for the first time in a long time. Overall persistent skin issues are gone.
Does anyone else have skin issues that could be related to UC? Also is it unusual for Pred and steroids to clear up your skin? I actually thought it tended to cause skin problems from what I knew about
it...
Thanks all as I navigate this new diagnosis and I've appreciated reading some of your stories and experiences and how y'all got through it!

A number of rashes are treated with steroids: psoriasis, eczema, and contact-dermatitis. Skin issues are a lot more common with UC patients. I've had contact-dermatitis on several occasions. It's possible the pred might have cleared it up. If, however, the rash comes back after ceasing steroids you might want to see a dermatologist.

Some UC meds do treat psoriasis too like humira. Humira being better than any steroid.
If the rash reoccurs in the future try an over the counter topical hydrocortisone cream.

Skin rashes may or may not be related to UC. My non-UC spouse developed bad skin rash and went to many specialists (derma MD's) trying for a cure and no success. We later moved to a new city and it cleared up. Later he had a re-occurence and discovered it was from spraying Round-up weed killer.
The place we moved away from was an HOA with tennis courts with lots of weed spraying there and everywhere else.
Skin rashes can also be related to food, soaps, chemicals in lotions and sunscreens, many sources and it's really hard to figure out what is causing them. Yes steroids can reduce the rash but without removing the source of the rash you are not solving anything. Steroid skin creams make skin thinner and bruises and bleeds easily as we know from experience, only a temporary fix.
Hope you find answers. It will be up to you as doctors don't have time to be detectives.

Skin rashes are one of those extra-intestinal manifestations of UC affecting about
15 percent of IBDers. Arthritis is the most common that affects about
25 percent of us. I lucked out during my last flare and had both symptoms, along with eye inflammation. But all those symptoms went away when my flare ended and I went into remission.
So of course prednisone will help skin rashes, along with Humira, because they stop flares. But any med that puts you into remission should end your skin rashes.
