Hello all!
I was diagnosed with Proctitis (from rectum to about 33mm in) back in Spring 2015 and was prescribed Canasa Suppositories as found those easier to use than an Enema. I found that the Canasa helped me kick my flare up but whenever I tried to taper off, I started having symptoms again, so since December 2016 I have been taking one Canasa (1000mg) every night and now the only issues I have is when I eat the wrong food (learning what I can and can't eat has been an ongoing diet challenge of its own).
I have no issues sticking with Canasa for the foreseeable future (one a night is worth it to be symptom free!) but I also need to try and save money now that I am doing my PhD. My current insurance that was able to cover Canasa for $25 is dropping coverage in 2018 so I am shopping for new insurance on the marketplace. However, most that are offered in my state do not cover Canasa at all and the only other one that offers coverage is fairly expensive compared to what I pay now. I can easily get it from Canada if need be.
However, I thought I would ask what are Canasa suppositories alternatives others with mild to moderate proctitis have switched to that are cheaper/available as generic? Doesn't have to be a suppository even. I see mesalamine is offered in pill form (Asacol) for example.
I plan to meet with my GI in 6 weeks but wanted to get some input from the community so I can start gathering data and looking at health insurance plans to get ideas of alternatives that are covered when I meet with my GI.
Thanks!
