I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2001. Tried asacol unsuccessfully and then I was on prednisone for a while which helped. I had to take a semester off college and after the prednisone I had mild symptoms but then zero symptoms. I never had any other symptoms for years and had a perfect colonoscopy in 2015 (suggested to check by my dr since my last scope was in 01 at the age of 20). So, I thought it might be helpful for someone to read that yes- you can go into remission and for a long time.
I have been lucky, but I started my 2nd flare 10 months ago. I’ve been reading this forum a lot and it’s been so helpful to find answers to the same questions I’ve pondered. The main thing I’ve taken away is that everyone is different. Over the last 10 months I’ve found out that the 3 5-ASAs I’ve tried make my symptoms worse. I had a reaction to my 1st dose of 6mp. Prednisone has only slightly helped this time around. . After a lot of hesitation, I got my first dose of Remicade and last week and I’ve seen major improvements finally! I got to where I was easily 10-15 a day And sometimes vomiting. This week 3-4 and no blood.
So you just never know what will happen! I was very sick in 2001. I had 15 great years in between with no meds. I’m not sure how long the Remicade will work or if I’d try to get off of it one day but I wanted to share that things can get better. I’ve met people who have found a healthy place by different means, some surgery, some on 5asas, some on biologics and another by sticking with a no sugar diet. Maybe a lot of people busy with their lives don’t take the time to post in forums so I wanted to take a moment to do so. Thanks for letting me find information here and best wishes to everyone!
