I have a sigmoidoscopy scheduled for January 3rd. Until then I’m dealing with a flare and traveling for the holidays... I’ve read Turmeric helps inflammation. Anyone have any positive effects from taking it? I’m bleeding with most of my bowel movements with the exception on one in the middle of the day with no blood. I was in remission for 3 years prior to this, so I’m very overwhelmed and just plain sad.

I have been taking 1500mg with breakfast and dinner for a total of 3000mg a day recommended by my doctor along with my Lialda. Not sure if it helped or the change in diet but have been doing pretty good for the past month.

Also recently out of a long term remission and I have just started taking Tumeric while I'm waiting to start Entyvio. First time I have tried something like this and I'm skeptical because my disease is severe but also hoping it will help a little! Hope you will see some improvement.

Thank you both for sharing this info! I’m new to this forum
so glad to be able to talk to understanding people. I’m going to try it. Any brand recommendations and where to buy?

Here is an excellent thread on turmeric/curcumin. Curcumin is the active ingredient, concentrated extract of turmeric.

I took highly refined turmeric/curcumin, had good effects for my UC and bad effects for the rest of my body so I quit (cuts would not heal and skin scratches got infected easily). I was taking 4 g daily of 95% turmeric.
Turmeric is very anti-inflammatory and can probably be very useful to many inflammatory diseases. But natural-based treatments can be just as powerful as RX in my opinion and need to be used carefully.

i total agree with Ima's warning - it can also thin your blood, exacerbating your bleeding - if it was me, i'd opt for a SHORT round of pred to get you through your holiday travels -

Are you not on any meds at this time or have access to any?
I would not take the turmeric.

I think adding turmeric and ginger to diet, possibly small dose supplements, can help manage inflammation. there are other anti-inflammatory foods too. maybe ad some probiotics.
taking large doses of these supplements instead of meds is just like taking meds, and can have unwanted side effects.
Jan 3rd is not that far away, and blood on stool some times during day is not as serious as all blood and mucus with urgency. I would worry less about
how to stop bleeding before scope, and think more about
how you plan to teat any inflammation found by scope.
good luck

Thank you all. @quincy Yes I am on meds - Apriso and colocort enemas. Not much urgency, the blood is what’s worrying me most. Super fatigued too. I’m not looking to replace my meds with turmeric, maybe I will add just a bit to see how if helps or doesn’t help. Thank you all!! Happy holidays!

How much were you planning on taking? I agree with pretty much everyone who commented about
it not replacing the meds or taking large dosages, especially without notifying your doctor at least. But it never hurts to ask your doctor about
it or try a small amount. I am taking a 500 mg tablet just once a day. Happy holidays!

I've tried both curcumin supplements and straight tumeric. Never noticed much benefit from the supplements but tumeric spice (heated in oil with ground pepper) has been fantastic. Someone else on here suggested it and I will say it's been just great (and has helped with my autoimmune arthritis too). Am concerned about
side effects, but also thrilled with how much it has helped.

I take 2000mg of turmeric a day... I'm in remission, so don't know how much it's helping with my UC, but it really seems to help the arthritis I have in my knee (and am hoping its helping my colon too). My sports doc said studies have shown you need at least 1200mg to be of any help for inflammation.
