I am looking for suggestions or remedies for a possible flare up. I have been having left sided stomach pain and nausea while eating and soon after. I wake up in the middle of the night flushed and have to go to the bathroom. I AM EATING THE BRAT diet and still experiencing discomfort in my stomach. My BM’s are normal and only twice a day. I haven’t had any blood, yet. I mostly go in the eve and late night. I do not want to go on STEROIDS. I’m concerned if I call my doctor she will just prescribe steroids for the flare. My stomach has an empty feeling so I try to keep eating small snacks throughout the day. I was on a 10 day supply of amoxicillin 875 mg back on Jan 10th-20th. I had been on prednisolone eye drops for two weeks too, from January 12-26 And last Tues 30th I started Xiidra eye drops twice a day for my very dry eyes. These are new on the market but I was desperate as nothing was helping my dry eyes I’m drinking Kombucha and taking a probiotic in the morn. I also have prebiotic powder. I have some hot tea to calm. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as this is affecting my daily routine and causing me anxiety. Thank you.

Yes. I forgot to add that I have been taking Lialda(mesalamine) 4 pills once a day. I went off them for a couple weeks in January because my Insurance deductible had not yet been met. I am now back on them.

Lialda 4 per day, and remicade still?
Have you tried Rowasa/mesalamine enemas? Those are always my 1st try before resorting to steroids...

I have tried enemas in the past. But it was when I had a really bad flare up and was bleeding with my BM’s. I have tried canasa and a hydrocortisone enema in the past. I never noticed them helping with the lower inflammation. I feel like if I can get this flare up under control I will avoid bleeding. Fingers crossed. Yes, I take Lialda, 4 pills at a time once a day.

I think your choices are Rowasa or steroids. However if you have been on antibiotics recently, you should ask to have a stool culture done as well to rule out an overgrowth of a bad bacteria in your digestive system.

Add rectal mesalamine enemas 4g dosage nightly till symptoms have totally abated (including skinny or pepple stool constipation phase), then taper to maintenance.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I am looking for a more natural approach to my flare up, since I feel it is in the early stages. If there is a build up of bad bacteria in my digestive system what are my options?

Except for in a few specific cases, like MAP infection or c. diff, UC patients take a big risk by taking antibiotics. UC patients have a difficult time generating a mucosal layer so things like antibiotics will irritate the hell out of the bowel. When did you take abx and which kind did you take?
Which probiotics are you taking? You said kombucha and another one, but you weren't specific.
Commercial probiotics have questionable efficacy when a person is recovering from antibiotic use. You may need homemade ferments instead because the numbers of probiotic in them are so much higher.

I am mot a fan of antibiotics. I had a sinus infection and had tried everything else. This was my last resort. It was Amoxcillin 875 mg one pill twice a day. That was on Jan 10 for ten days. It seems like I hadn’t felt well before that. On Dec 15, I came down with a mild case of the flu. But with my immune system I was down for three weeks.. I took a couple doses of thera-flu and muccinex and that seemed to aggrevate my insides. I’m taking shaklee probiotics, lifeway kefir, kombucha and prebiotic powder. I decided to call my GI after work and she wanted to have blood work done and stool samples. Since I do NOT have a fever she will wait for the results of those tests before moving forward. My tummy def seems to get more irritable in the evening and night.

I think your GI is on the right track. Fiber feeds the good microbes, but if we aren't feeling well, fiber isn't always a friendly option.

If you want to 1st try a natural approach then there's
Probiotics: Can be in pill form, yogurt, kombucha, kefir, fermented foods. Common oral pills/powder are Align, Culturelle, Florastar, Naturen, and VSL#3.
Curcumin
Various diets: IBD-AID, SCD, etc..
Hardly any guarantee that any of the above will work. Try them if you are so inclined.
