Humira Loading Dose - Is this going to be miserable every time?

I did the Humira loading dose today. Hurt, but not horrible. I can deal.

But now I have four big knots where the shots went in, they are red, black and blue.
They hurt like the dickens. The muscles in my abdomen hurt. It hurts to bend over. It hurts to even sit up.

I have a headache. I feel nauseated. My back aches. A lot.
My joints, especially my wrists have been hurting for a while now, but it seems to hurt more. Or maybe I am just focusing on it?

The tops of my feet and hands are itchy. I had the same thing from Imuran.

Is this going to happen every time?
This had better be worth it!

take an antihistamine, that will help with the itching.

I got really bad dry mouth from Humira, there are mouthwashes to help with that.

I would use the ice packs that came with the Humira to numb the area before the injections. I think it helped with the stinging and swelling.

Benadryl will knock me out and I can sleep through this.
I hope it’s a side affect and I’m not coming down with something.

I started Humira on 11/17. I get a flu like feeling the first day after the shot and initially was tired the first few weeks. Now I still get the flu like feeling the day after, but then get too much energy the weekend after the shot. I don't like being on the drug, but its working. The shots are easy for me and I never get lumps. I'm not sure why that's happening to you.

Definitely use the ice packs on the spot before you do the injection. They help so much.

I would leave my shots out for fifteen minutes and I wouldn’t feel them at all. I got bruises with my loading dose but then never again. My joints would hurt so bad that they woke me up at night and I also got the headaches along with shakiness and flu like symptoms... the joint pain never went away until I stopped but the flu like symptoms only lasted a couple of days.

The nurse said this isn’t from Humira. It is.

We left the pens out for 30 minutes before.

Still feeling fluie. The knots and bruises are still there.
No miraculous cure yet. Ha ha, it’s been a whole 20 hours.

I did my shots in my thighs & pinched up a fair amount of skin when injecting, nurse showed me this. Also, let it set out on the counter a few minutes. I never got up the nerve to do the shots in my stomach, too much of a chicken, lol.

More than likely you hit muscle when you auto injected the shot. This will cause bruising and swelling. Humira was amazing for me not one side efffect. Make sure your pinching enough skin as to not hit the muscle remember it’s a subcutaneous injection.

Side note I was in remission for 5 years forgot I had UC so I stopped taking Humira. A year later I flared up and Humira no longer worked because my body developed antibodies. Do not stop taking it if it works for you. I wish I had known that.

I have been on Humira since last July and have a dose every week.
No problems in any way but my pen shot is given to me by my better half who is a nurse, don't know if that helps.

Inject humira into an area that's more fatty (if you have any as we can loose weight so fast during flares). Injecting into muscle isn't fun and will hurt more. Check your thighs, belly, and even underneath arms if you got a better injection spot with less muscle and more fat tissue.

Always ask for remicade instead... it goes right in a vein. Body fat is irrelevant.

Many insurance companies prefer to send nurses to your house to do the Remicade infusion, there is a big reduction in the cost for the insurance company when they can do at your house.

Statistically, Remicade works a little better than Humira. I had some annoying side effects while on Humira with Dry Mouth, headaches and itchiness. I think the difference in the reactions is that Humira is made from a Human Protein were as Remicade is made from a mouse protein, surprisingly I found Humira very hard to tolerate vs Remicade which was great for me.

It’s been five days now.
Bruises are just black spots. Just feel like bruises.
Only 1 still has a knot. The muscles feel a lot better.
Still a headache. Still a little flu-ish, but not horrible.
Tired, but I’m always tired.

Not noticing any miraculous cure, but it’s only been five days.

My husband is taking my to a beach. Beach always makes me feel better.

If you take an antihistamine does your headache go away? maybe it is an allergy response to the Humira. A member (PB4) had headaches with Humira after her injections, she started taking Benadryl with the injections and her headaches went away.

Benadryl makes the itching better.
Then I can sleep through the headache.
