bleeding from using glucosamine?

Hi. I’ve had a mild case of colitis for years. Only recal bleeding as a symptom. I’ve been in remission and for the last 6 weeks I’ve been taking glucosamine condroitant. I’ve had rectal bleeding for the last 6 weeks and the enemy’s or uceris is not healing it. Anyone get bleeding from using glucosamine or is this a coincidence?

I take glucosamine without any issues at all.

I was wondering the same thing. I started taking Glucosamine after having knee pain (as per GP suggestion). Several days later, I noticed that my bowels had completely blocked up and the only thing that I had changed was taking the glucosamine. I googled the glucosamine and it did mention that it can affect people with UC and reactive the inflammation. I naturally stopped and it took a lot of effort (taking prunes, magnesium etc) to get the bowels moving again.

My UC started with very narrow bowels and did not want this issue to start up again.

jovana, can you share the link that said that glucosamine can cause problems with UC? I just googled "glucosamine chondroitin ulcerative colitis" and everything that came up said that it seems to help reduce inflammation in IBD

I take it because it's a miracle worker for joint pains. But I have had some bleeding the last couple months which is slowly clearing up. I blamed it on the extreme stress I had been under in December & January. I never thought glucosamine could be a problem.

I do not recall a specific website. I just searched for constipation as a possible side effect of taking glucosamine and a various items came up as a possible side effect. I do recall one mentioning that it can reactivate colitis. Look up glucosamine and constipation as well as ulcerative colitis. It may not affect everyone but it is a possible side effect and it scared me more than the pain and swelling in my knee.

Before I started taking glucosamine/chondroitin several yrs back, I asked my IBD gastro about it. I mainly wanted to try it for knee stiffness I got when seated for half an hour or more, such as occurs when traveling. Gastro advised me to take just 1 500/400-unit dose per day, stating that the manufacturers' recommended daily dosage could cause negative GI side effects such as increased gas. I have followed this advice w/o any problems, but I am cautious about buying only glucosamine500/chondroitin400-unit caps or tabs & avoid any variant that includes MSM, Vitamin D, or other "active" ingredient. It could be that the dosage is too high for you to tolerate or that you are having a reaction to some added "active" ingredient or to added sodium, etc. that some compounds of gl/ch also contain. Definitely read the labels before purchasing! / Old Hat (37 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
