Hi Spring,
The half-life for prednisone is about 4 hrs (time it takes for half the pred to be metabolised.) It takes about 16 hrs for pred to leave your system.
They use split doses to keep the levels high around the clock, which reduces the inflammatory response but keeps us awake!
The body has around 10mcg of cortisol in the morning, and this drops to almost zero by bedtime.
(Around 5mg of prednisone is considered a replacement for the natural amount of cortisol produced in the body. This is used for people who don't make their own cortisol.)
If you haven't taken pred for more than 2 weeks it doesn't generally stop the normal adrenal production. So, people can stop fairly abruptly if they have had a short course.
Beyond 2 weeks the body stops its own production, so you need to taper carefully to ensure the body recommences production.
Reducing the evening dose first helps with sleep. Taking all the pred in the morning also helps.
Everyone metabolizes differently, but that is the general pattern.
