Hi, I am new on this forum. Two years ago I was first diagnosed with proctitis. It was treated with Flagyl and Canasa suppositories. After the first dose of Flagyl, all the nausea, cramping and diarrhea were gone within hours and I could eat normally again. This made me think the cause may have been bacterial. Then after a week or two, the bleeding, mucous and urgency were gone as well - I assume because of the Canasa. I ended up having a delayed allergic reaction to Flagyl, so I cannot take it again.
I am having my first big flare and my GI doctor prescribed Canasa suppositories again - said to use for 30 days and then come back and if I still have symptoms he will need to do a scope and try other solutions. He did not prescribe an antibiotic, saying it was not usually necessary (and I cannot have the most common one for UP- Flagyl). Well, it has been 9 days and the only improvement I see is a slight reduction in blood, and I have nausea, cramping and diarrhea that seems to be getting worse. Does Canasa sometimes take this long to improve things? I am wondering if I should give it the time he suggested, or try to get back in sooner and request something different? Is the stomach upset/diarrhea normal for proctitis? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!
