Pentasa dissolves throughout your small intestine and colon, and is used for both Crohn's and ulcerative colitis. It would be my last choice of oral mesalamine for proctitis for that reason, since U.P. is limited to the very last part of the colon. Is there any reason why your GI Doc prefers Pentasa?
Personally I would focus on rectal meds, such as mesalamine retention enemas and suppositories because they basically bathe the inflamed tissue for hours and hours and have a much more profound effect.
I have taken more than 8 grams of mesalamine if you add up oral and rectal, and I've never had any problems, but I still get blood work done periodically to check liver and kidney function.
