Mesalamine enema or Colocort?

I had been on a Colocort enema and it helped a bit, but I got frustrated with not being able to hold it in, with many accidents on the way to the toilet after pumping it in. So, I was off enemas for months, but just tried a Mesalamine enema. It was immediately uncomfortable, but I held it in. At 3am I had explosive diarrhea, and continued into the afternoon. Just awful. I never want to experience that again.

Am I allergic? It would be strange because I take Mesalamine orally w/o issue.

I called my doc to clarify and he found 22 cm of ulceration beginning in the rectum, so my actual diagnosis is ulcerative proctitis.

And, just to muddy the water, starting on Humira tomorrow.

Many of the mesalamine enemas use sulfite as a preservative. For some, sulfite is an allergen. There's sf-Rowasa, a sulfate-free version that is available.

Standard Rowasa Ingredients:
Each rectal suspension enema unit contains 4 grams of mesalamine. In addition to mesalamine the preparation contains the inactive ingredients carbomer934P, edetate disodium, potassium acetate, potassium metabisulfite, purified water and xanthan gum.

Just reading the pkg. Mine has potassium metabisulfite. Could that be the culprit?

It's possible. Ask your gastereoneterolgist for a prescription for the sfRowasa. It's likely a special-order from your pharmacy, and at times a little difficult to come by.

I use sfRowasa but when I am flaring it is harder to retain than colocort. Typically the liquid from colocort gets absorbed while sfRowasa only coats the colon.
