Hi everyone,

My GI put me on mesacol 800 x 3 a day along with probiotics and multivitamins. Also did a 10 day course of prednisone.

After 2 months my GI felt that I was in remission. So he changed my dose to 800 x 2 a day and asked me to continue the probiotics and multivitamins.

However started experiencing red mucus along with my BM's. Is this normal in remission ? No pain , No cramping , No diarreha or any other symptom. BM's 3 times a day only. Please guide ..thanks

Hi...no, not in remission. Seems flaring is what's happening.
My first suggestion is to request rectal meds....specifically mesamaline retention enemas in conjunction to your increased oral meds to 2400 mg daily.

What is the location extent of your UC?

It's not fresh blood. It's more like some of them are streaked. No blood on tp also. BM's look normal otherwise. GI asked me to start physillum husk.

If it's streaking on the stool and not on tp (usual for fissure or hemmie to bleed with blood on tp as well).....then you could have rectal inflammation to the point of friability that bleeds when you have a bm.

What did your GI assume it was? If it continues.....the GI to take a look-see and hopefully it will be treated accordingly.

The GI said it's fine and continue the medication. Add physillum husk. He seems to be not bothered.

Red mucus = flare, full stop. 1,600mg of mesacol is like taking a sugar pill. The minimum you should ever take is 2,400 mgs of mesacol as that is what is known as a remission maintenance dosage of mesacol. A flare dose of mesacol would be 4,800mgs. Not sure why you're taking such crazy low doses... seems pointless to be taking so little...
