I know this is a late question, but hoping for some responses. Stooooopid search function doesn't work for my device I guess.
My husband is having a c-scope tomorrow and directions are for 2 Dulcolax while starting the prep at 6. He will start around 4 30 so he can be done early......anyhoo, most reviews of the dulcolax are of excrutiating cramps, vomiting and nausea. He never had that with the straight gallon preps..
I was thinking for him to take one now and the other at the start...
Thoughts?

Hi Q, I have never done the gallon prep, but the last couple of times I prepped I did use dulcolax. I actually used more dulcolax than my instructions said because I have SOOOO much trouble cleaning out. The first time I did not experience any cramping, vomiting or nausea from the Dulcolax. This most recent time I did get some cramping. (The nausea & vomiting came later from doing the Citro-Mag, that is vile stuff).
Let's see, my official instructions said take 2 Dulcolax at 7:00 pm the night before the prep. Begin drinking vile liquid at 3:00 pm the following day. The third Dulcolax is to be taken at 5 am the morning of the scope (not sure why, but I did it. And now that I think about
it, I did have vomiting that morning which I usually do not!!).
My opinion is, I don't see why you can't alter the schedule the way you have suggested. If you are more worried about
the cramping, then that makes sense. My overriding worry is always being adequately cleaned out, but if he doesn't have a problem being cleaned out, then why not space out the pills a bit.

I took 4 last week before my scope. I did the gatorade and miralax.
I had serious cramps with go litely, years ago. But not last week. Was rather pleasant

Thanks for the replies! I had him take the first Dulcolax at 3 and the other one 4. He started the CoLyte at 5. So far, at 6:30, he's been in the bathroom 4 times so a bunch more to go. Thankfully....NO cramps or nausea!!!!! Woohoo.
LOL Serenity....vile liquid is a good one, although I've never done Citro-Mag, I can see how the name would fit, haha.
I would never take something the morning of the scope...eeewww, poopies already done the night before ....what would be left in there? More like just adding ass-ult to injury and start over again. That's one I would nix for sure.
Good it worked for you tho regarding being cleaned out!
Cmburks....good your prep last week went well and without discomfort. How long did yiu take the 4 before doing the miralax?
thanks again.....

If I remember, I am going to ask my GI next time I see her why the one at 5 am? Just out of curiosity. But unless I get some compelling reason from her, I am not going to take it next time. I've never vomited on my way to my scope before, doubt it's a coincidence.
Hope your husband's scope goes well!

Yeah, good to ask and find the reason, but refuse to take it. Seems totally redu dant and a waste of rectal energy....lol.
He's done his last glass.....yippee! He's just a bit chilled from the cold drink, but that should pass soon.
He thanks you for the good wishes......he says he looks forward to the toast with PB&J afterward (what they give at that hospital after scopes).
Im not looking forward to leaving at 7 45 to drive him across the city in morning rush traffic. Hope my butt behaves before that, sheesh.

What I found in the archives some drs said 2 pills & some said 4. I think if someone has to drink a gallon of that crap 4 would be pure overkill!! I never managed to drink it all because I would start puking. I saw lots of posts saying Miralax & dulcolax was tolerable compared to most. I never took anything the morning of the scope because I wouldn't make it to the hospital, lol.
I hope your husband's results come back normal.

All seemed to go without one cramp or discomfort!! He's had polyps in the past....but the doc has not taken biopsies. I'm pushing my husband to request them. Hopefully, the doc will do so.
Funny thing about
getting up so early.....my butt isnt cooperating. Sigh.
Thanks all for the feedback.

I did it once and I got cramping and nausea. it also didn't work for SOOOO many hours for me. I'ts weird because I've seen a lot of people mention it being an easy prep. I also have nausea and vomiting from golytely without dulcolax. I guess I am sensitive.

Nssg.....yep, i would say sensitive, lol.
All went well, but he never got his pb&j on toast in recovery 😣....it was requested that I bring it for him! LOL.
No polyps and all looked normal.....not enough meds however, and he doesn't need another till 5 years.
Whew!

Well that is great news! Except for the pb&j on toast... I have to say I was surprised when I read that earlier, that he got that in recovery. The most I've ever gotten was a digestive
cookie. And last time I threw that up once I got in the car.

Apparently, the area where the scoping was done, before February, was day surgery....and offered there because most people would have had to fast if being put under. The new area doesn't offer it....and yes, he got digestive
cookies, lol.
I think some anaesthesia causes nausea as well. Ugh....i guess you dont have digestive
cookies anymore?
