I agree with getting blood levels of nutrients like D and B12 but there isn't an easy way to check magnesium. Mag is so important to your body that it will cannibalize it from bones, etc., in order to maintain blood levels. Low magnesium and potassium levels are associated with Restless Legs Syndrome and twitching. No surprise that taking it seems to help already.
I regularly supplement with magnesium but not more than 250-350 mgs/day. Magnesium is a laxative (think Milk of Magnesia) and Magnesium Citrate is a colonoscopy prep. So as someone with UC I am afraid to take too much. You could supplement oral magnesium with Epsom Salt baths that lets your body obtain mag thru bypassing the digestive system.
