Are you looking for short term disability?

if you have LTD insurance and can get a doctor to certify your inability to work with accommodations, then you may be successful with the insurance company. getting government benefits is trickier. it does not come from the employer, but form employer offered optional disability insurance.

I looked at my LTD policy a while back, and it does not kick in until 3 months out of work, and pays 66% of salary and needs re-certification every 6 months. The STD policy I have picks up after 2 weeks, but only pays for 9 weeks and only at 54% of salary. Together they cost an extra %60 a month of payroll deductions, and sometimes I think I should cancel them.

We pay and pay when we work, but when we are too sick to work and need the benefits that we paid for they fight you tooth and nail. What a great country...
Also the requirement that we apply for Social Security Disability is just another slap in the face, it just gets the insurance company off the hook for most of your benefits. Many of us don't want government help when we've paid for private insurance for decades, how these huge insurance companies operate is just wrong, dead wrong.

I to would welcome insurance industry reforms. Upfront disclosure of what is and is not covered needs to be clearer. In the disability area, degrees of disability need to be more carefully handled.

Most of my co-workers do not take the STD and LTD optional insurances because they want the larger paycheck. This makes for a smaller pool of higher-risk people. For most it is SS disability or nothing. Until there is a larger constituency for private disability insurance regulatory reform, progress may be slow.

I'm not trying to troll you but we usually go for surgery. That's probably why it's so difficult to get LTD.

If you want LTD, I suggest getting a lawyer. Chances are much better to get it.

Well, those tidbits of severe weight loss or other complications are on a website suggesting you hire an attorney to make the case, ... and that is for SS. You asked about employment based LTD insurance benefits. Attorneys are less successful with insurance claims, because it falls outside of the administrative law that governs SS appeals.

Between being relapsing/remitting and the invisibility of IDB, disability claims can be hard to press. I don't think impossible, but not a sure thing.
