I’m just over three months post takedown and my ostomy wound site finally closed up a couple weeks ago. My surgeon left it open and I had to pack it with gauze until it closed up. I’ve read that some people wounds were partially closed and healed much faster. Mine was about the size of quarter and looked like a bottomless pit (at first). My question is how long it takes before it feels like there is some strength back there. My wound is closed but it still feels weak and I feel like I still need to baby it when I’m excercising etc. I really don’t want to deal with a hernia so I’m fine being patient. I’m just trying to get a realistic idea of how long before it feels like this thing is fully healed?

Run i had surgery #3 on August 21.My visiting nurse said mine was a rather large hole/wound.It took a good 8 weeks for mine to close.Cleaned it every day,stuffed little gauze with saline in it every day.I still have a nice size scab there.Now i did get a hernia but up high on my vertical incision bc i lift,move around a lot being I'm a contractor.Now hernia just showed up 3-4 weeks ago so be careful.I was thinking I'm more likely to get hernia soon after surgery once i start working but i see that it can happen many weeks or few months after surgery.So surgery #4 in January.I'll be fine.Hey be patient,give wound few more weeks.Do some exercising that won't bother that are,low impact prob good start.Be smart and Happy Holidays

It's varies a lot between people. I've seen people on the ostomy board saying there's wasn't healed after months, and other people say it went faster. Mine healed relatively quickly, but there were some bumps along the way. I had some sutures work their way out and it caused irritation, but nothing intolerable. I used heat packs to help it along. I am sure you're fine, so long as it doesn't hurt or ooze. If it just recently closed, I would give it some time before straining the area. If you're not sure, speak to your surgeon. Are you done with all your follow ups?

I would still take it easy , give it some time before straining, lifting and using those muscles.
Mine closed up fairly quickly within 3 weeks . But I am still careful not to put a lot of strain to the area .
And it’s been since August

3timechamp I am sorry you have to go through yet another operation . It is better to tackle this now then later, when is the operation ?

I’m definitely taking it easy when working out. After not being able to work out for the past year, I’ve basically atrophied into a bag of white flour. I’m getting sore from lifting pink 8 lb weights....
My next follow up with my surgeon isn’t until April. My plan is just to take it pretty easy until then, maybe get back into swimming?

Valli I'm seeing Plastic surgeon on Jan 10th.My surgeon wants P.S with him when i have surgery.Looking to have surgery end of January.Contracting on east coast of U.S is always busier Spring/Summer/Fall.So now or ASAP is best time to do it.I don't want hernia to get any larger so rather they fix stitches that split now rather then later.

My doc put in staples, and it healed well. I remember it was a good 5-6 months before I felt up to doing regular stuff like exercising. I think after having such bug surgeries, and basically re-routing how your body processes food (sustenance of life), it takes time to recover and figure things out.

Are you eating enough, and good stuff like protein and everything? I’ve heard that makes a difference in healing time.

I’d say take it slow. 3 months out and still healing- maybe you can do diff, more low key exercise?

Hang in there. Long road but it’s worth it!

I want to say I was working out 1 month post take down. My wound however was sowed shut I believe. I was 25 at the time though so I probably healed a bit quicker.
