Mesalamine has a rare side effect of heart inflammation, listed as Myocarditis/Pericarditis within the warning sheet included with the med. It is one of those things that happens infrequently enough that your gasteroenteroligist practice might not have had any patients with this problem in the past. So, it is important to mention this potential effect and ask for diagnostic tests to prove/disprove this possibility (typically a chest xray). To be clear, I am not recommending you cease your medications without doctor approval, as this is only a possibility, and a small one at that, but worthy of exploring.
In the event this is an adverse reaction from the mesalamine, then you'd have to switch to another non-mesalamine medication option to treat your UC. Discontinuing mesalamine would stop any medication-induced related heart inflammation within a few days of ceasing that med.
