C- Budesonide Long Term

Hi,

This is my first time posting after reading the forums for a year or so. I have ulcerative proctitis and my doctor prescribed me compounded suppositories of 3mg C-budesonide and 500mg of Mesalamine. They work very well for me and my doctor said I can be on them long term. I am tapering to use only 1 per week. I've heard your not supposed to use c- budesonide long term but my doctor said its fine. Would like to know if anyone has any experience using c-budesonide long term or information about it and the safety of it.

My doc stuck to the guidelines of 8-week oral budesonide (Uceris) and was hesitant to do a 2nd 8-week run.

But rectal is much less absorption than oral. I can understand why your doc said OK.

There is some concern that even rectal steroids can thin colon wall, but suspect the lower amounts of budesonide versus hydrocortisone and the once a week might mean very low concern about very long term use.

This study was related to collagenous colitis, but patients were treated with budesonide for 12 months without issues: https://gut.bmj.com/content/65/1/47

I found this only because I started Uceris foam about a week ago and it is the ONLY real relief that I've had in months smile

Not recommended for long term usage, due to 10% systematic absorption. Will give you nuisance steroid side effects, and long term usage might result in osteoporosis, glaucoma, type ii diabetes, bowel wall thinning, etc.
