Colonoscopy 2 day prep this time :(

Only did it once and its not easy bc previous Scope i had stool in intestine.Now I've had 15-20 scopes and that was only one so i dealt with it.

15 Dulcolax tablets 2 eves in a row? That sounds crazy-- unless you have an enormously long colon!!!!!! I can understand your thoughts RE looking for a new gastro. If you do go that route, try to get one who subspecializes in IBD treatment. / Old Hat (38 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

The Stanford University Hospital instructions, with PEG 3350, work better for me than many of the 'dark ages' procedures some GI docs suggest. For your consideration:

One (1) day before your procedure: CLEAR LIQUIDS ONLY & FIRST ½ OF PREP
You will receive a call from the endoscopy department to confirm your
appointment time. You need to know this time because it determines when you should
drink your second dose of bowel prep. If you have not received a call by 3 pm the day
before your procedure, please call the location where your procedure is scheduled.
1) You will be on a clear liquid diet the entire day before your procedure:
• Do not consume solid food the entire day
• Do not consume alcohol
• Do not consume milk/creamer with your coffee, sugar is ok
• Consume clear liquids only, such as:
Chicken, beef, or vegetable broth Consommé
Sodas Juice popsicles
Black coffee with no cream or milk Tea with no cream or milk
Fruit juices with no pulp Clear Jell-O
Sports drinks Clear, hard candy
Lemonade and juices with no pulp

2) Morning: Mix your bowel preparation and refrigerate
o Golytely, Trilyte, Colyte, or PEG 3350 Electrolytes: Add water to the fill line
of your container and mix. Optional: Add a flavor packet if it was provided.
o Suprep, Moviprep, or Prepopik: Mix as directed on the package.
Note: Suprep’s instructions indicate that a patient may eat a light breakfast
the day before the procedure. However, please consume clear liquids ONLY.
3) Between the hours of 5 pm - 9 pm, drink the first dose
o Golytely, Trilyte, Colyte, or PEG 3350: Drink one glass every 10-15 minutes
until you have consumed ½ gallon. If you feel nauseated, take a 10-15-
minute break until the nausea subsides. Refrigerate the rest of the prep.
o Suprep, Moviprep, or Prepopik: Drink the 1st dose and then drink the
specified amount of clear liquids as detailed on the package instructions.
o Bowel movements often begin about 1 hour after the first glass, and may continue for 1 to
4 hours after you finish the last glass. Consider using baby wipes and/or ointments to
minimize anal irritation.
o Bloating, nausea, or chills are common and are temporary. If nausea is severe take a
30-minute break, and then resume drinking the bowel prep slowly as needed.

The day of your procedure: SECOND ½ OF PREP
1) Upon waking, you may continue the clear liquid diet. Absolutely no solid foods may be
consumed.
2) If applicable, take your blood pressure and heart medications with a small sip of water at least
30 minutes prior to drinking the second dose of prep. If you are diabetic, you should not take
your oral diabetes medication or injectable insulin on the day of your procedure unless
otherwise instructed by your doctor.
3) Using your scheduled appointment time (not check-in time), determine when you should take
the second dose of bowel prep:
o 5 hours before your appointment time, begin drinking the remaining half of your bowel
preparation, and finish within the hour.
o Stop drinking all fluids 4 hours before your appointment time.
o Example: If your scheduled appointment time is 8 am, start drinking the second dose of
prep at 3 am and finish by 4 am. Do not drink any more fluids after 4 am until your
procedure is completed. You will be able to eat and drink as soon as your procedure is
completed, unless you are told otherwise by your doctor.
4) Your colon is well-prepared for this procedure when your bowel movements are either clear or
clear yellow. If your bowel movements are still brown on the morning of your procedure, and
you do not have reduced kidney function, kidney disease, a sodium or magnesium restricted
diet, a diagnosed stomach or intestinal blockage, or history of seizures, you may consume a 10-
ounce bottle of magnesium citrate and finish the bottle no later than 3 hours before your
appointment time.

He specializes in ibd for sure and he’s really nice. He will actually let me come by and talk to him so I don’t have to schedule appointments cause my insurance plan sucks. My office copay is $100 I will just have to tough it out. Maybe i’ll Stop eating a little later in the day before I start the whole prep ;)

Thanks but He doesn’t do the colonoscopy with that one day prep. I have to do a 2 day prep taking 5 dulcolax pills at 4, 6, 8pm Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s going to be tough being on a liquid diet for 2 days but ppl fast like that all the time and my flare up is very mild right now thankfully.

I will keep you updated. I read about this prep last night and some gi’s say to use miralax too but he didn’t mention it. I’m also suppose to do 2 saline retention enemas the morning of the colonoscopy. Sure glad I work from home.

Are you sure they are retention enemas and not the flushing-out type of enemas, such as Fleet enemas? That's what most of us use to prep for flex sig-scopes, and I have also used them before c-scopes. I don't mind using those. I've never used Miralax so I don't know what that is like.

I get scoped every two years.

I've had enough flex-sigs to know what a muppet feels like lol, maybe a dozen thus far. I've had one colonoscopy. I'm left-sided inflammation, and I'll say flex-sig whenever the doc insists on taking a look. Less pain in the butt (figuratively and literally) for the prep and procedure, and I forgo the sedation. In, out, and done in a lot less time (and I can eat before the procedure).

So right after I took 5 dulcolax yesterday, I had a buddy of mine who works in health insurance tell me he can switch my plan. I had been posting on ig about this and how my plan was the worst and everything has been so expensive. Got a new plan that starts June 1st so my doc let me postpone till then 👍🏻 I will update when I finish this prep. Let me tell you though, 5 dulcolax pills had me on the toilet from 4pm till 9pm. I can’t imagine if I woulda taken 5 more at 6pm and 5 more at 8pm like he wanted. My stool was almost clear by 9pm after only taking 5 at 4pm haha.

He won’t prescribe the regular one day prep either cause he doesn’t think it’s enough prep!

2 days with no food is wild. I almost want to find another gi who does the one day prep. Happy Easter!

I see you're already in the middle of the prep. I have done it once for a flex sig but it was my own initiative. Anyways, I'm now readying he won't do the regular prep? My GI gave me choices of preps and I told them which once had worked and which one hadn't. They always gave me the one I asked for. It was moviprep BTW. I'm sure if you ask again next time he can give you something else. Let's see how this scope turns out though. Ask for pictures so you can see yourself. Two days is ridiculous. Either way I hope everything is going well. Keep us updated.

I would never do a prep where I had to fast for two days; I can barely handle fasting for one day. I tried the Dulcolax/Miralax (and I was also supposed to drink a bottle of magnesium citrate but didn't) prep once and it made me horribly sick, like I felt like I might pass out. Now I always stick with GoLytely, which is the prep my old GI doctor told me is the safest. I split it up -- night before the prep and morning of. It sucks but it hasn't ever made me sick.

I've had quite a few colonoscopies but mostly that is because I've switched around to quite a few GIs (either because I wasn't happy with mine or because I moved) and new GIs always want to take their own look. I agree that a lot of the scopes seem unnecessary. Now I have to get one every two years since I'm past the 8- or 9- year mark or whatever it is (I thought it was sooner than 10 years).
