Uceris vs. Budesonide - success with either?

I am trying to stop a flare for over 2 months now. Have been on prednisone both orally and rectally. GI wants to try Uceris before trying Humira to see if it might help. Uceris is not covered by my insurance and is super expensive, so my GI prescribed Budesonide today for me to pick up. He said to try it for 10 days and let him know if it is helping. Is there a big difference between Uceris and the generic Budesonide. Have people had success with either?

59 year old female
dx 1998 w/ mild to moderate proctitis
Delzicol 3600 mg day
Cortisone enemas daily

Uceris/Budesonide is only meant for mild to slightly moderate inflammation. Whereas Prednisone is meant for moderat to severe inflammation. Sorry, Budesonide isn't going to do anything if pred could not touch it. Waste of time.

Yeah, why would Uceris work over prednisone? I don't know what your GI is thinking. Uceris never did crap for me.

Prednisone did not put me in full remission, but helped me alot. The GI does not want to keep me on it too long. It's been 2 months. If Uceris didn't help either of you, I'm guessing prednisone didn't either? That was not the case with me. This is why I think he is wanting to try this approach.

Prednisone took me from 25+ bms a day down to 4-6 bms a day. I never felt 100% on prednisone as some say it does for them. What did work was remicade, I was totally off of pred after 2-months on remi. I'm hoping humira works as well for you.

In your situation, I would stick with the prednisone until the humira kicks in (usually 6-weeks or less for a response to humira). I know pred long term sucks and isn't good. But you need to live and function while you wait for humira to kick in. And if you're only 2-months on pred then there's hardly any worry at this time. Yeah 6-12 months of pred or longer is a bad idea.

No, prednisone has always helped get me back to normal. Uceris is way less strong than pred, that's why we're saying Uceris won't work if pred didn't.

Please note: Not all budesonide is created equal.

Uceris (9mg tablet) is more suitable for UC and the generic version was only approved last summer.

Your insurance likely has approved the Entocort version of budesonide (capsules) which is a fraction of the price and will likely cover the Uceris generic only after the cheaper budesonide capsules (which nobody really prescribes for UC anymore) have proven ineffective.

You never know, the topical aspect of Uceris just might be a fit for you. I’ve personally never had a flare severe enough to take prednisone so Uceris has been successful for me. I say it’s worth a shot before the stronger meds.

I am currently on day 5 of Budesonide. No improvement at all. GI says to call in 10 days if no improvement and will start me on 6mp and Humira. I am so discouraged. My symptoms don't match my diagnosis he told me. I have proctitis and it's moderate, however, my symptoms are pretty severe. Seeing alot of blood and mucous and very urgent stools. Lots of accidents. This is no way to live. As much as I hate going to these stronger drugs, it can't be any worse than what I am going through every day. I know most of you understand this and how much it sucks! Alot of stress in my life right now does not help. It has been chronic stress for months. I hope the Humira and 6mp work. Not sure what else to do.

Budesonide usually begins to work in about 24 to 48 hours, but up to 2 to 6 weeks may pass before you feel it's full effects. May be time to start investigating stronger meds.

When you use uceris tablets do you get the same symptoms as pred, where you get irritability and lack of sleep? I am having lingering rectal inflammation that is causing urgency and frequency. In Canada we no longer have cortifoam available and my doc is suggesting uceris tablets. I hated pred and it done nothing during my severe flare.

Uceris is a 90%topical and 10% systematic medication. Prednisone is a 100% systematic medication. It's that systematic bit that gives us the awful side effects. So uceris is a lot better than pred in that regard. Some say no side effects and others say only mild side effects.

I had zero side effects from Uceris and I’m hyper sensitive to everything.

Thanks for your response folks. My question is this. My CRP is totally normal as of yesterday but I for sure have the worst rectal inflammation since I got out of my severe flair. The remicade is dealing with the major colitis issue but not the “end”. I have tried all supps and enemas and now still in a rectal flare. Should i try the uceris tablets?
Can they really help the rectal area?

For rectal inflammation, I'd go for a steroid enema, foam, or suppository. Uceris foam, hydrocortisone/Buedisonide enema or suppository.
