Making mesalamine enemas from asacol tabs?!

Morning. It’s been years since I posted last but I find myself in a pinch so I thought I would reach out.

Im a duo citizen residing in the US. Currently I’m visiting Canada. When I left the US I was in pretty good remission from pan-colitis and tapering mesalamine enemas and so I just brought enough enemas for every other night. Of course as soon as I got here things ramped up. Ideally I would take an enema each night at this point. Canadian pharmacies will not accept a Rx from a US doc or a pharmacy Rx transfer

soooo ... since I have lots of mesalamine tabs (asacol) with me I’m wondering about making my own enemas out of asacol tablets. I only need 6 days coverage before I’m back in the states and can get the real deal. Has any one ever done this? Any thoughts? Thx

The tabs would have to be crushed to the point where release mechanism was not an issue. Then you would need a suspension medium that was comparable. Then you need to insure preparation is sterile.

All this, and it may not work due to unidentified factors.

Better to switch to every other day for a week, or work out a way to use only 1/2 the dose in a sanitary fashion.

Good idea to use the enemas every night at half a bottle each as DB suggested. That will give you coverage still into the sigmoid.


Note to self.....always bring max meds when travelling.
Hope you feel Ok the rest of the time in Canada.

What did you end up doing? Sounds like it would be a huge pain to try to make enemas out of Asacol tablets.
