Aha, the GP as "gate-keeper"! Didn't realize that Canadian med also has that phenomenon. I've generally been able to avoid it by not joining an HMO, but do have other inconveniences occasionally (mainly RE vaccines) because primary care MDs keep changing their affiliations and/or leaving the region entirely. (Which also causes problems for HMO patients in my area!) In fact, I met with a very good one last May who then left the practice in Nov. & I just found out this internist subsequently joined a so-called "boutique" MD group in a new swanky location! (Thumbs down!) RE getting test and/or procedure reports, at times I've had problems with incorrect or missing data despite increasing computerization of patient files, which initially was praised as the definitive cure-all for past mistakes and lapses.
