How much blood is too much blood? My weirdest flare ever

Anyone get urgency so you run to the bathroom for the x time and its just blood with barely any stool?

I've only had flares where it was 20-25 BM per day with blood mucus and stool or a moderate flare with about 10 BM per day with some blood, but this time...

I am currently having about 8 BM per day but only about 2-3 of them actually have stool. Sometimes formed, sometimes loose. All the other times its just bright red blood with little to no stool at all and its a lot of blood. Not sure what is going on here. Ive never had a flare like this. Anyone go through something similar?

I have an appointment with my GI but its not for another month! I told them what is going on to be seen sooner but apparently they cant fit me in anywhere.

Would I be losing too much blood to the point where I will start to feel tired?

That’s how all of my flare ups have been, the last being the worst. My last flare up I was passing blood with big clots every evening around 7:30-9 and it was borderline head to the hospital. In hindsight I should have gone in. It seemed like a lot of blood to me.

Flare symptoms depend on location of inflammation and how mild or severe.

What meds are you on?

How is this flare different than your others?

Ernie,

Call your GI clinic again and escalate this. Ask to speak to your GI doctor by phone and tell them it's urgent. Even if they can't see you, they can call you for 5 minutes and suggest some treatment options, including adding/modifying med doses. My GI responds to email within 24 hours and calls back. My previous one didn't so I found someone else. If they don't respond, long-term find a new GI specialist.

You can also ask for cdiff test and fecal calproctecin test while you are waiting for your appointment.

A few drops of blood mixed with diarrhea or toilet water can look like a blood bath. It can be a bit deceiving and cause a lot of anxiety and panic.

UC is characterized by small, almost microscopic ulcers. There are many of those ulcers, and cumulatively they can produce 1-2 teaspoons or tablespoons of blood within a 24 hours period. So you're not going to bleed to death or anything.

The color of the blood tells you how far it's traveling. If it's a bright, lighter red it's from your rectum. If it's a red wine color then it's from higher up in the large intestine or beginning of the small intestine. Black is from the stomach or high in small intestine.

Ive been only on apriso, started the SCD diet 2 weeks ago, also started cigarettes again 3 weeks ago :-/ I got desperate. Havent seen my GI but spoke to his assistant and was prescribed Uceris and started that today. I was on Uceris just once last year.

momto2boys: thats what i had, blood with big clots but the clots seem to have reduced and its been just bright blood these past few days and...

tiredofallthispoop: bright red usually is hemmis but my flares usually come out like that. This time im realizing that I actually may also have hemmis. Feeling some interior swelling and a bit of trouble pushing out when its formed or loose. No pain or itching though. Ive only had hemmis once and it was very mild, just 1 exterior lump and no blood, it went away on its own. Anyone have any remedies in case it is hemmis? Im seeing witch hazel is my best bet?

Jane: ask for cdiff and calprotectin test? Is this something like a kit they give you and you can do it at home?

ipoop: Youre right. I definitely did panic, mostly because of all the blood because I have bled this much with past flares but it was mixed with stool and 25+ BM. Just seeing the blood alone is what gave me the anxiety

HI Ernee,

Given that you are in a waiting period, it would be good to rule out cdiff and check on the inflammation with the fecal calproctecin test. Basically, you ask your GI to order both those tests and all you do is pick them up from a nearby lab (lab where your GI has you do blood work etc) and then drop them off with stool collection. The lab gives you the containers to collect stool in with instructions and then you collect at home and drop off. Pretty straightforward.

Yes, my current flare is like this, lots of blood. Moderators will chime in, but usually the rectum / lower part of gut that gets hit first and is the last to heal so you are very "friable", meaning the tissue is thin and wrecked. You'll get bleeding from that even if there's no stool pressing on it......the blood irritates the anal area and produces your urgency. Then just a squirt of blood. Steroid enemas seems to work well for many - see if they will call that in for you until you can be seen. You're not alone.

I've had many flares, all with different symptoms, but if your stools are still formed then it's a sign that the inflammation is limited to the rectum +/- descending colon.
