Hi,

I did a food allergy test today and found that I'm mildly intolerant of yeast but very intolerant of monosodium glutamate. Does anyone with UC have such an intolerance to monosodium glutamate? It's a food additive.

That is such a horrible sensitivity to have! Because MSG is in almost EVERYTHING. I found this link for you if you are interested.

I've never been tested for this and even though it's not that common, it still can happen to anyone.

Yes, MSG does not mix well with my body at all. When I eat it I get hives and weird brain fog. I try to avoid it at all costs. The cool thing I've found though, is that when I go to most Chinese restaurants and ask for them not to use it in my food, they are usually totally cool about leaving it out.

Hi..I avoid it as much as possible by reading package ingredients. One does need to know all the names it's listed under, however. It's in a lot of foods/preparations.

I'm not intolerant to it that I know of.

Wow I knew nothing about MSG until I researched it this afternoon. How is this ingredient at all passed by the FDA?. And it has no benefit other than to add taste to bland food and allow food companies use less raw product for the same taste.

I have never noticed MSG causing any problems with my UC but it does seem to trigger migraine headaches. Everytime I eat something with MSG I will usually get a headache like clockwork, so I try to avoid it as much as possible.

Hi Damo,

this is a great info to have for you. Perhaps your symptoms will go away if you avoid MSG? It would be interesting to see if that is what happens.

I am also planning to get tested for food allergies...

Apparently MSG produces some of the widest range of symptoms in people than any other food related allergy. A lot of the effect is nuero - based but this can then have knock on effects on the bowel and stomach.
