6mp and miscarriage... Need positive reassurance

Just curious to see if any of you have had a miscarriage early in pregnancy.  In August I got pregnant our first try :) (at least I know I am fertile!) but unfortunately had a miscarriage at 5 weeks last week. 

I take 75mg of 6mp and all of the research I have seen seems to indicate that their is no increased rate of a miscarriage.  I know that miscarriages are more common than we like to think and it probably has nothing to do with my meds, but it is in the back of y mind.

Anyone have positive stories of pregnancy and 6mp, or pregnancy after miscarriage?  Per the drs orders we will be waiting 1 mont before trying again.

I am so sorry that this happened to you! I think you are right, though... it is likely that your miscarriage is not related to the 6mp or the UC. I am currently pregnant (17 weeks), and I am on Asacol. My positive story is that we tried to get pregnant for four years. No infertility treatment worked, so we gave up. Three months later, I turned up pregnant.

During the time we were trying, I did a ton of research, and everything said that UC does not affect fertility or pregnancy. My GI concurred. Still, I always blamed the infertility on my UC (regardless of what the science was telling me), and obviously, I was wrong about that because I still have UC and now I am pregnant. My GI tells me that his hospital, the Cleveland Clinic, has a ton of 6 mp babies and even a few Remicade babies.

Hang in there... this will happen for you! I have a friend who has two healthy children after 7 miscarriages... and she is a perfectly healthy woman, just a little older in age (like me). Sometimes, the Lord works in mysterious ways.

I have no words of wisdom because when I was pregnant, they didn't even have 6mp or Imuran out on the market yet. But I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for the loss. A couple of my friends have had miscarriages so I know it's not easy.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. We had problems getting pregnant - nothing to do with UC. My body did not produce enough of a hormone that is needed to keep you from losing a baby-

I do think it happens more than what people realize, that being said after our loss I was pregnant again 3 months later, to a very very active healthy boy that does not let the grass grow under his feet.

Again, I am sorry, I would not wish the loss of a child in the womb or out on worst friend.

I am very sorry too.

My GI co-authored a study about pregnancy and 6-mp; he told me that 6-mp is safe for the fetus, he told me that a flare is more harmful for a fetus than 6-mp. He offered to show me a whole wall of baby photos that he had in his office of healthy babies that were born to mothers that were on 6-mp while pregnant.(I was telling him that I was reluctent to take 6mp at first) I would suggest seeing a GI who specializes in pregnancies and IBDs, Or a OBGYN that specializes in high risk pregnancies.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Miscarriages are painful on many levels. I think it's much more dangerous for the fetus if the mom is in a flare than for the mom to take the medication and stay healthy during the pregnancy. After having two children, I miscarried our third. That's when I first came down with UC. It was definitely the worst flare I have ever had and it took a while for my OB to suggest I see a GI and then for me to get in to see him. Things got really bad and based on my labwork, he told me the baby probably wouldn't live. I really think my flare caused the miscarriage. The good news is we had our third about a year ago and that helped take away a lot of the pain from the miscarriage. Hope this helps.

I thought pregnancy on 6mp was a no no.. Something about potential changes at the chromosomal level my doctor was saying.. Maybe the miscarry was natures way of saying this isn't going right.. Not trying to be harsh.. just honest.

Miss_Patience -- I saw my OB this morning and asked him about your situation. He said he has had "several" women go through an entire pregnancy on 6mp. All had normal pregnancies and normal births. He said what someone else mentions earlier in this thread... the danger to the baby is from the flare-up... not the 6mp.

I thought this might make you feel better!

Thank you all for your repsonses and kind words.  All of my drs and I have seen many including a high risk OB, assure me that 6mp is safe during pregnancy- but it is reassuring to hear it over and over again, from others prospectives.  I think these things just happen, and my UC nor my meds are at fault.  We just need to try again!


Expecting- That was so sweet of you to think of my situation at your appointment today.  Thank you so much for the reassurance.  Hopefully we will be able to try again really soon, and I will be paging you for advice!  Heres to a happy and healthy remainder of your pregnancy, and congratulations for being so patient in your mission to have a baby! You are right- the lord works in mysterious ways, and although I dont understand the reasoning for it all the time, I am hoping I will soon!
