Sulfasalazine possesses antimicrobial properties?

According to Wikipedia and other sources, sulfasalazine can be classified as an antimicrobial agent. This I find quite interesting given the efficacy of the drug itself in treating ulcerative colitis. I'd be curious to know how many doctors and patients alike have ignored this important mechanism. I wonder if it would be safe to assume the same of mesalazine?

Was anyone else aware of this?

Yes, I believe Elaine Gotschall, developer of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, talks about it's antimicrobial effect, although I can't seem to find the discussion on the SCD Web site at the moment. She felt sulfasalazine (Azulfadine) was the drug of choice for treating UC or Crohn's colitis.
