HELP THE LIALDA IS MAKING ME SICK

I STARTED THE LIALDA YESTERDAY AND WITHIN AN HOUR I STARTED FEELING WEIRD, DIZZY AND NAUSEATED.  I WOKE UP OUT OF A DEAD SLEEP WITH THAT AWFUL DREADED GUT PAIN THAT MAKES YOU CRINGE AND STARTED HAVING LOOSE STOOLS WITH BLOOD!  WHAT AM I GONNA DO? MY GI SAID WE'D KEEP CHANGING MEDS TIL WE FIND THE RIGHT ONE. IM GONNA CALL HIS OFFICE, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I have reacted this way to every one of the 5ASA drugs- though given my experiences I have been afraid to try Lialda. Sorry that you reacted this way. Have you been on Imuran or 6MP yet? I have no problems at all with Imuran but it doesn't seem to do much for me. After 5ASAs and pred those are the next standard therapy, with the bioligic stuff like reicade and humira the next heavy hitter beyond that. There are tons of alternative or experimental treatments out there apart from this but none of those are taken very seriously by any GI's.

I havent tried Imuran or 6mp yet. I called the gi office and hes supposed to switch me to something else. Ill let you know. Thanks for responding.

The frustrating thing about Imuran and 6MP is that it can be many months before you sense if they are making any positive impact at all. However, clearly for some they can be very helpful. I am keeping mine up for now but I can't say it really helps. For what it's worth, I seem to be benefiting from the pig whipworm eggs (TSO) which is not very accepted by the medical community yet, and happens to be very expensive. But that's what I mean by not closing doors on alternative and/or still not generally accepted treatments. Also, many who don't do well on one 5asa med do fine on others, so you may want to try the others if you haven't already (Colazal, Dipentum, Asacol, and sulfasalazine).

I know it sucks to keep trying different meds, especially when they make you worse. So sorry to hear it! Maybe one of the other 5ASA drugs will be better for you. If you do have to try 6MP or Imuran, you'll need to take something else at the same time until they kick in.

Maybe while you're trying the Lialda and other drugs your doctor won't want you to confuse the issue by taking other drugs at the same time. That seems smart because now you know that the Lialda made you sick. Hey, on the bright side, you had the reaction to it quickly so you didn't waste weeks taking it only to find it didn't work and was making you worse.

The next class of drugs to try-- the immunosupressors-- have some long term risks that the 5ASA drugs don't. So I would make sure there isn't one 5ASA you can take before you jump to 6MP or Imuran. Not to scare you, just to let you know that it's worth the hassle of trying some more 5ASA drugs first. I've been taking 6MP for almost 2 years and I think it has really helped. But I'm comfortable in my decision because I know all the other drugs didn't work for me.

Ask your doctor for some free samples next time so you don't have to buy the whole prescription! :)

I am so sorry that Lialda does not work for you. Asacol had not helped me very much but Lialda did. Guess we all react differently.

Hey everyone thanks for your advice.  Im pretty bummed out right now.  Ive been feeling nauseated all day and having diarrhea.  My gi wants me to go by and get samples of colazal tomorrow.  I paid 45 dollars for the lialda so im glad hes gonna give me samples.  Glad your all here for me because im feeling like giving up.  Thanks again.
