Prednisone users: what time do you take it?

Do you take all of your Prednisone at once?   I just bumped up from 20mg to 40mg today and want to make sure it is ok to take it all in the morning at one time.  Is the best?   thanks bluechipguy

I have always taken mine in the morning so it doesn't keep me up at night.

When I am flaring or even as I taper (as I am now) I need to take about 2/3 in the morning and then a booster of 1/3 or so after dinner to prevent too much pain keeping me up at night. Sometimes I even took 50% in the morning and 50% after dinner. Officially, all in the morning is supposed to be optimal for the bodies adrenal needs, but it just doesn't work for me because the 'gap' overnight results in so much renewal of symptoms that I can't sleep, and renewed bleeding sets the stage for not making any progress in healing.

I split mine until I was at 15mg. So I would do half in the am and half before dinner.

Sammi takes hers in the morning and she was at 40 (now at 35). She takes it with breakfast says eating wth it kills the taster it leaves in her mouth.

With this flare (I was out of practice for 9 years) I started by splitting it and it didn't help at all. Once I took it all at once in the morning there was an immediate change for the better.

Funny how some do better with one dose a day and others with splitting. I know that one way one is supposed to help the body get off pred altogether, when on the very low doses (a few mg or less) is to do alternate days, but even that caused me to start flaring in the gaps, and I did much better to spread it out. However, at very low doses alternate day is certainly a good way to avoid having to make tiny splits of the pills, especially if one can;t get 1 mg pred tablets.

I split dose 20mg in the morning and 20mg 12hr later before bed. The GI only told me to do this because I was having more symptoms during the night than the day when I was just taking all 40mg in the morning. I guess it depends at what time of day/night you get most of your symptoms whether you should split dose or take all in the morning. Goodluck.

Thanks Cavalier9, well the only symptom I have is a lot of bleeding... and some occasional gas, but I don't see a difference in the symptoms during the day or night. I'll see how it goes in the next few days, I just want to get better before fall semester begins and I go back to school...

Yes, I take it all at once. My GI told me specifically NOT to split the dose.

As an anti inflammatory prednisone works better if split up into two doses 12 hours apart. This keeps a more constant level in your system. However, a common side effect is restlessness and taking it at night can make it difficult for many people to sleep. This is why they suggest taking it all in the morning. We were told to first try splitting it up and if you have any issues sleeping to take it all in the morning.
