Bleeding While Weaning... Is this normal???

Wow- I wish I had this site while I was at my son's hospital bedside for three weeks. Reading these posts here seems to put my mind at ease to some degree. He's been home from the hospital since 10/3/07 and improving after a course of Colozal and Solumedrol (which was weaned into Prednisone since the removed the PICC line 2 wks ago). He just had his 3rd Remicade on 11/13 and also on 25mg 6MP (which I keep catching myself wanting to call MP3...) He has had some success however this evening he starting bleeding quite a bit again. Scares me as he lost a lot of blood prior to and in the hospital.

Have others here experienced quite a bit of blood loss while weaning off Prednisone? He is down to 10mg this week. sad

Hi Judy, welcome to Healingwell :) I'm so sorry your son got diagnosed with this but glad you came here to look for help. Has your son ever tried rectal meds? Rectal meds might be able to help him wean off the pred easier. But yes, a little bit of blood or increase of symptoms can be expected when weaning off pred. His body has to be accustomed to a lower dose however if he has bleeding for more then a few days after his weaning, that should not be normal. Was he done bleeding completely when he started to taper? Ideally he should not be bleeding at all when he begins to taper or it could set him up for a relapse. Where in his colon is his UC - is it thru out?

Hi and Welcome! Whenever I have taper pred I usually have a relapse of symptoms for 2-3 days as my body adjusts. Keep in mind too the 6mp can take awhile to kick in too.

Thank you Red & tjf for your responses. Yes Red, he was on rectal meds in the hospital but that did not seem effective at the time. Since then his father (we are divorced) gave him a suppository of some kind during a weekend visitation however that seemed to aggravate his symptoms immediately. Other than that set back a couple weeks ago his symptoms were gone completely.75% of his colon is affected by UC.
