could hydrocortisone enemas cause weight gain and round face?

my daughter has been using the enemas 2x daily along with colazol and azacol and messalamine enema and canasa suppositiories, her face is a bit rounder, i didn't want to tell her, but she just asked me if the steroid suppository coud be doing this ?

You wrote in an earlier post that new doc had prescribed Cortifoam to supplement the oral 5ASA meds. This is only a 10% steroid formula & therefore unlikely to cause side effects. Even the liquid hydrocortisone enemas, which are stronger steroid doses, can be used for a few months without causing "moon face". Prednisone is the med most likely to cause it. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

i did say she is on cortifoam, but she is also using the hydrocortisone enemas both of these are 3x daily along with all of the other things i mentioned. it is all supposed to be for 3 weeks only, then the dr hopes she will just need maintenance with the pills and cutting back on rectal meds. do you need to taper diown cortisone rectal meds like you do the prednisone?

I've been on cortifoam for as long as a yr BEFORE tappering and never in all the times on it experianced any weight gain or puffy face.

It doesn't react the same ways as taking oral pred, oral pred gets completely into your blood stream, enema form doesn't in any comparison.

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•bloody or black, tarry stools
•confusion, excitement, restlessness, a false sense of well-being
•eye pain, decreased or blurred vision, or bulging eyes
•fever, sore throat, sneezing, cough, or other signs of infection
•frequent passing of urine
•hallucinations (seeing and hearing things that are not really there)
•increased thirst
•irregular heartbeat
•menstrual problems
•mental depression, mood swings, mistaken feelings of self-importance, mistaken feelings of being mistreated
•muscle cramps or muscle weakness
•nausea, vomiting
•pain in hips, back, ribs, arms, shoulders, or legs
•rectal pain, burning or bleeding after use of medicine
•rounding out of face
•skin problems, acne
•stomach pain
•swelling of feet or lower legs
•unusual bruising or red pinpoint spots on the skin
•unusual tiredness or weakness
•weight gain or weight loss
•wounds that will not heal


See rounding face mentioned here, you're suppose to report this side effect (as well as any others listed above) to your doc.

I'm lucky, as far as I know I never had any side effects, hope that continues for as long as it has to....mind you, knocking on wood I havn't had to be on it for the last 3 yrs now and that's a long time for me.

I've never had any problems using foam enemas, its been a long time since i used the prednisolone liquid ones. But i'm sure that it is possible that they would have similar effects.

Yes, I was only on it for 4 days and gained 5 pounds. I had to stop because of an allergic reaction.

I Got moon face and a puffy middle from the hydrocort enemas. Not as bad as with pred. Been off it totally for about a month and a half. The weights starting to come off now. I'm sensitive to all steroids.

Do they cause weight gain because they make you hungry and you eat more or do the steroids actually slow your metabolism?

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm on my cortenemas and prednisone at the moment. The insomnia is already killing me, although I think it is mainly from the pred, not enemas.
