Hi Mark,
I also have what is called a "leaky valve" which I have had for many years (most likely since birth) and recently it has worsened. You really need to find a specialist, preferrably in Columbus or even Pittsburgh. Whatever the cause of your heart problem, it's beyond lifestyle, it's obviously hereditary. Heart disease and premature death runs in my family also. My grandfather and uncle died before they were 50 and my father had many stents (sp?) put in. My brother had a stroke at the age of 48 (he recovered fortunately) and he neither drinks, smokes (never had) or is overweight. Of course an unhealthy lifestyle aggravates the whole situation and can lead to early demise. No one looks forward to surgery but you should seriously consider it if it is recommended, especially at your young age. If the cholesterol medicine is not working then you need to go to something else. I know with my heart medication, I had to try different ones to get my arrythmias under control and it took some time. There is no instant result and you have to follow whatever directions your doctor gives.
If you are having chest pains, you need immediate medical help. If you start having pains in your chest, arms, neck..whatever, call 911. With your family history, any ER or paramedic is going to take your situation very seriously.
You are so young and there is hope! Please take care! Let us know how you are!
