I had some severe chest/ breathing problems in 1998 and drove myself to the emergency room and all I got for my troubles was one LARGE asprin and a small galss of water!!~#!!
The second person I saw sent me to the intensive care cardiac ward and soon they found a 90% blockage and I had one uncoated stent put into my LAD artery. My current doctor said the critical time is 10 years after stenting. He said that if I had not done anything except take a statin that my poor diet would have "done me in again".
I have since got my HDL up to 76, last week is was only 73 (for a male this is quite GOOD). I am on ZOCOR and I NEVER NEVER exercise. I drink "reserve wines" almost everyday and I eat very very very little red meat. My supplement list is quite large but I think I know which ones are raising the HDL from some recent info I found in NIH-NLM PubMed.
I had one of those fancy CAT scans and they found NO plaque and perfect blood flow in 2006. A real big difference from 2000 exam (17% restriction). My doctor is totally shocked and I brief him every visit on my program and continuing research. My last office visit with him(A cardioligist) was for 3:45 pm and I did not get out of his office until 8:30 pm. I was his last patient of the day.
See my other recent posting here on this forum.
Hope my story helps.
