I've been reading current and past posts and have been surprised to see so few posts about prevention, diet, and possible alternatives to the common path of being diagnosed with a blockage, then the only choice being a stent or bypass.
Of course I do realize that many many heart problems are not due only to blockages and such. PVC's, valve problems and a host of others conditions.
However, given that a high percentage of folks are on long slow path to eventual coronary artery disease, I'm a bit surprised to not see more posts about "garden variety" artery disease and what might be done to slow or halt the progress.
I recently had a CT angiogram that finally showed what I suspected, a blockage. I had previously had treadmill ekgs, and nuclear profusion SPECT testing, each showing no significant problem about 2 years ago.. I suspect the nuclear profusion scan was negative ONLY because they didn't take me far enough into the treadmill such that I never got to the point of exertion where I normally got angina on all my bike rides.
Anyway, now that I recently am officially diagnosed with a blockage I am and have been more interested in diet and such.
For now I decided to not do a coronary angiogram, because they said if you do one, you must accept that a stent will be placed if they find a blockage of 70% or greater. No time to think about it. They aren't keen to just take a look now and decide on the stent later.
Yet, studies seem to indicate that in situations where individuals only have stable angina, that stenting offers no benefit in terms of preventing heart attacks or deaths.
So I was looking for a place where more people are discussing diet, exercise, and such. Surprised to see so little discussion of it here since the most common form of CAD is around coronary artery problems.
Perhaps there is another place for such conversations? or is it just something not posted about too often?
