"Diabetes and atherosclerosis:
The deadliest duo"
"Most of the morbidity and mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes is attributable to atherosclerosis. Aggressive, evidence-based management of atherosclerotic risk factors is your best approach to preventing coronary, carotid, and lower extremity disease.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among patients with diabetes."

"Two out of three people with diabetes today will die from heart disease or stroke. Diabetes often goes hand in hand with high blood pressure or high cholesterol, which can add to the risk for heart problems. However, by keeping up with the latest research, you can learn new ways to prevent or treat heart problems."

Headlines and topics like this help to make us understand that what we do now for the rest of our lives to stay healthy is very important! I have Diabetes Type II, along with atherosclerosis, Do You?!
"Atherosclerosis (ath"er-o-skleh-RO'sis) comes from the Greek words athero (meaning gruel or paste) and sclerosis (hardness). It's the name of the process in which deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and other substances build up in the inner lining of an artery. This buildup is called plaque. It usually affects large and medium-sized arteries. Some hardening of arteries often occurs when people grow older."

There are some things that we can do to help ourselves.
If you have type II diabetes like myself, just by increasing daily exercise and watching food intake is a great start!
Cutting back on some of the carbohydrates and eating foods higher in monosaturated fats like peanut butter, or nuts like almonds and walnuts instead.
Reading labels and watching the calories and saturated fat intake can also help!

My nephew (Who lives with us) is a disaster waiting to happen..He just turned 18..He`s about 5' 11" and weighs at least 270 pounds..He has diabetes of some type and high blood pressure..He spends at least 14 hours a day on the internet playing fantasy roleplay junk and gets up only to get another snack..I think he`s left the house once in the past 2 weeks..Even when he eats healthy food he eats so much of it it becomes unhealthy..But mainly he eats junk food including lots of sugary things..He rarely tests his blood sugar..If you try and talk sense to him he gets all annoyed and hostile and mouthy and you get aggrevated and give up

Wow, Sara!
Does he use insulin? You are right to be so concerned! He faces a lot of problems if he doesn't 'grow' up and get out of denial about
this. Diabetes can cause a lot of problems that if he would just realize...
Any time you'd like to have him come on line here - he's more than welcome!! We have a Diabetes forum here at HealingWell if he'd be interested.
